if it's a s/s commuter, you could use a double and run one ring????
also being a 172mm, you be no better off than a 170/175.
a single track type crank of a reasonable quality will cost you lots more. -

And... you can take off the smaller ring and buy some new smaller nuts, they only cost a fiver for single chainring bolts and voila! I did this for a wee while when first finding my feet and it worked fine :)
