  • So since a few months I've been enjoying quaker oats for breakfast, apple and blueberry. They are sweet as fuck, but since I'm sharing kitchen with 70 other people here, getting a big bag of oats in is not really an option so I'm stuck with the sachets. Anyhow, today I ran out of apple and blueberry and nicked a golden syrup one, and muthafukka how sweet is that? Isn't porridge oats supposed to be a healthy breakfast option rather than a sugar bomb dropping from outer space?

(thanks for listening, I feel better now)

  • kboy but since I'm sharing kitchen with 70 other people here

where do you live? is it a detention center?

having breakfast at work, big office here. but... detention center isn't that far off

  • Big bag of oats at home plus a ziploc bag. Sweeten with tiny bit of agave syrup.

  • I ??? flapjacks.

    Oats rule.

  • Pft, fucking Vanilla doesn't support unicode.

Imagine little musical notation where the ??? is, and that I love oats.

  • mix up two deciliters of porridge oats with four deciliter water --- microwave for 3 min, add apple sauce and milk. voilá

    cheap, quick and healthy.

  • I use sainsburys taste the difference oats. Nice and large, not chopped up and dusty, biggest oats I have found better than quaker. Add some dried fruit if you wish, makes a lovely hot porridge or cold muesli. Keep the suff by / in your desk.

Much better to have the proper stuff rather than the sachets. The more chopped up stuff your get in the sachets are not as sustaining.

    Flapjacks rock too.

An alternative flapjack recipe that I like replaces the golden syrup with condensed milk and uses dessicated coconut and dried apricots for the fruit. It's kind of like a tropical flapjack!:)

  • handfl of scots oats + banana + super whey protein powder + blender = one very happy chappy

    Mmmmmmmmmm.

  • Sugar is for wimps, syrupy sweeties for kids. Maybe some raisins, the go puffy and lovely in hot porridge. Ditch the refined sachet shizzle. Eat breakfast at home! Breakfast at work is just wierd, is it cos its free? I would understand that. If you took decent porridge outs to work, laced with 'wierd' seeds, no one else would eat them!

Peanut Butter in Porridge is for muscle, brains, can't be topped. Seriously.

Almost as good as sesame, flax, hemp, (all crushed) with Sunflower and pumpkin seeds, which is the mix for winners! that shit'll even make you happier.

  • It's all about the agave syrup. Truly, the weber tequiliana azul agave is no less than a gift from the gods (even though they clearly don't exist).

Sugar is all about short, sharp hits and massive plummets. Agave, meanwhile, is low fat, low GI, and fructose-based, so about the slow, sustained release. And it tastes great. And they make tequila from it (the plant, not the syrup). Whack that shit on your porridge. Or use it in your margarita instead of triple sec/cointreau, with a good, sexy plata/blanco and you've got a Tommy's: the finest take on the classic out there, and almost every bartender's fave.

I love agave, la la la. When I grow up, I want to be one of these bad boys.

  • I like short, sharp hits and a massive plummet, rince repeat. People eating sesame, flax, seeds and shit are ladyboys.

  • Yeah right. Puts lead in ya pencil dude.

  • I must start eating porridge before I go out on rides..

  • my dad well loved porridge....every morning when we woke up for school he would have a row of bowls full of porridge, like the three bears.
    I HATE THE STUFF!!

  • Skullhead Yeah right. Puts lead in ya pencil dude.

I got enough heavy metal in my teens, thanks all the same.

  • I have a kilo bag of organic oats from the supermarket. About 5 minutes in the microwave and it sets me up for the day. I have them at about 11am and they keep me going til lunch. If I have them before I go to work I'm hungry by 11! Add a bit of sugar or honey for sweetness. Cook with a pinch of salt and water not milk. Last tip - if cooking in the microwave use an over sized bowl - saves a lot of cleaning up afterwards ;-)

  • Rolled oats with apple juice and brambles is good - best saved for the summer though. You need something warm at this time of year. I like Scott's microwavable stuff. Chuck it in your bag and eat it at work. Which means that you can set your alarm clock as late as possible, fall out of bed and clamber onto the bike. I don't understand folk who get up early to cook breakfast and watch the news. We'd all sleep till twelve, if we could get away with it. :-)

  • velocity boy I ??? flapjacks.

    Oats rule.

+1, I'd live on 'em if I could get a steady supply going.

Good oats if a little pricey, thats why I go to Julian Graves to get my fruit then I can mix it up as I want. None of this microwave powder stuff real oats is what you want. I am also a proponent of the 2 stir 2 formation. A straight 4 or 5 min is not up to the job, intervention is need mid way. I also recommend soaking your oats overnight in the fridge. They cook a bit nicer and have plumped up so in the morning all have to do is add a little milk. the pre-soaking stops them going too dry in the microwave. Creamy

  • Flahavan's Irish porridge oats are the best I've had in my 32 years porridge career. I come from Northern Ireland and grew up eating the stuff - I like 1 part porridge to 2 parts milk, simmered until it's so thick you can slice it, with a spoon of sugar and a pinch of salt mixed in. Then I add a moat of milk around the edge.

I'm also a big fan of fried kippers with buttered bread...

    mmmmm breakfast
