I see loads of people do it on my commute, but knowing the unpredictability of the average bus driver, there's no way I would do it.
-
• #4
i sometimes do it to buses...its good, especially up hills.
-
• #5
do you mean sketching them? i do that all the time mostly lorries lots of hand holds, or the FREX bus
-

I do it on buses when I know the road, the stops, and keep just enough space to swerve if need be.
Wouldn't do it on trucks. You cannot predict what they'll do at all.
Wouldn't grab hold of anything either... if your legs wobble whilst hitching a ride it would be messy.

Last week I got a 'lift' off a pick-up all the way up Pentonville road, and the driver gave me a thumbs up when I went past him. Ace.
Though sometimes the drivers get well pissed off.

No funking way am I holding onto a lorry... one mistake / lack of sight lines / pot hole etc... you will stack it bad. You will hear your bones crumple into a useless heap contained within a bloody sack of flesh.
You may be great on a bike and very intuitive / know road etc... but you'll never know what the driver will do next..... sheesh!

i like pick ups, lotos of holds on the side, easy to get away from. if it gets dodgy

Tend to avoid it altough I do see people doing it along Tooley street which seems sill with all the stops, lights and congention they. Just end up having to brake hard while I get to cruse on gently.

i pull a flip mode coz most of the time the buses are behind me.
coaches are good coz yah know they arent gonna just stop ram-domly.

Yeah I notice that on brixton road, which is a bit daft considering there are actually more stops per mile than there is road.

i tried my first skootch the other day quite fun really save the old legs too drafting buses is a must in a strong headwind 5-10 mph quicker just keep right on one of the corners so you can take evasive action where neccesary oh my skootch was on a non fixie so probably a whole load easier !

Each to their own, I've never done it and to be honest never will. I ride my bikes, a motorbike, a car and often drive a 7.5 ton truck for work, I'm always hyper hyper aware of cyclists especially the dumb wobbly ones, but whichever way you look at it, a wee bit more exercise is good for you especially when compared to being crushed.
...and yes it is possible I'm a bit paranoid now.

The best are trucks or large 4wd's like LandCruisers on faster, open roads like Maroondah Hwy.. you can see right through the window of the LandCruiser to preempt any slow downs.
I do it here but it's lame because 90% of the time the fscking buses or trucks have to stop. Stupid traffic. -

denvers the best city for it, roads down town hit 40-45mph easy, lights are sinked for 3 blocks with an all walk on the fourth, so you dont really have to worry about oncoming traffic till the 5th light if you time it right.
-
• #18
Yeah but an Aussie "block" is already 5 of your Denver blocks :P
-
• #19
yeah but when our girls talk it doesn't make you cringe.

That's what you think.

Holding on to vehicles is against the law - I'm sure it is. On the other hand, drafting behind buses and the like is absolutely fair game. Just make sure you know where all the pot holes in the road are. And watch those brake lights!

hippy That's what you think.
ok what they say yes, but not the voice.... what the hell is it that makes any good looking aussie girl have an accent like dragging nails over a rusty aircraft wing?

Anyone do this kind of thing? I've seen a couple of people doing it but way too much of a wuss to try it myself. Don't think I could keep up anyway. Any good stories to tell?
