Barry McGee in Gateshead?!

  • Where the hell is gateshead and why on earth has he decided to do a show there?? Bizzare!

    http://www.balticmill.com/whatsOn/present/ExhibitionDetail.php?exhibID=93

  • £$£$£$£?

  • from what ive heard the baltic is a pretty serious space!

although the idea of twist tags in gateshead is a tad strange.

  • Platini You dropped this...

    haha awesome

  • I got a beautiful barry mcgee figure going up on ebay soon. dont want to sell it but needs to pay for the new bike.

  • as in sculpture?? never seen one of them. hes got a big feature in 'swindle' this month too with a pic of him riding some folding bike with 'bob jackson' written on the downtube in marker pen, haha.

  • Mr Barry McGee stuff is amazing,

That blatic gallery is a good place. we tend to get spoiled down here in the smoke, lets not forget our North East brethren.

  • Conan - hear gateshead, think Newcastle. The Baltic is a converted flour mill on the south bank of the Tyne. It's had a bit of a shaky life so far, but some pretty interesting exhibitions. Give it a chance! Its really the premier venue for art in the north east really...

I'm newcastle born and bred, and an art student at st. martins. If it wasn't for the shows that have been put on or have visited the baltic (Antony Gormley, British Art Show 6, Carol Rama retrospective, this, others I cba to name...) I wouldn't be doing art now. The baltic is good but they could use their space better, quite infuriating. Worth a visit if you're in the area though.

By the way did you buy a silver deep V (rim only) from BLB today? I was in there with my pista negotiating some replacement forks. Was going to say hi but I didn't really feel up for saying "are you conan?" in public.

    I'm alex by the way!

  • Agree with asm, baltic looks impressive from the outside (even in its former life before resoration it was an intriguing building), but inside space could be used much better.

  • yeah. i'm hearing that.
although gateshead council does quite a lot for the arts. as opposed to newcastle council who do fuck all.
although i'm very cynical about the whole redevelopment of the quayside.
    k

  • Yep that was me asm. A belated 'hello'.

  • so whereabouts in the toon are you from asm?
    i'm heaton born and bread!
    k

  • mister k, do you still live in Geordieland?

I moved out 11 years ago and never got round to going back.
Born in Newcastle, raised in Cramlington.

  • @ Conan - It was something they made in the states. It's like one of his characters in the form of a pen if that makes sense?? It's pretty nice and about five inches high but needs to be sold to make way for more bike bits.

  • Born in Jesmond (Princess Mary's - now flats! I visited the room i was born in - that was weird), lived in Gosforth till I was 4 then my parents moved to Ponteland.

I don't have an accent though, despite being a genuine geordie (neither of my parents are from the north). I was in Byker Grove though, as an extra for 2 episodes during a battle of the bands scene.

Been in London since last year... Do any of you guys return to the north ever? I dont get the chance to ride fixed up there, but i've NEVER seen another fixie (i guess it's hardly surprising!)

  • i live in london now. been at uni here for a year and a half.
i feel sorry for ChrisNW, i can see why you don't want to go back to cramlington! haha!

asm - EVERYONE has been an extra on byker grove! what school did you go to?

and it's far too hilly for fixies in newcastle. don't think going down byker bank would be too fun!

    k

  • Everyone eh? Have YOU been on byker grove then?

I was an RGS boy. It's not THAT hilly, went on a couple of rides round stamfordham on my fixie over christmas - managed ok, wasn't that much harder than ss anyway. Same here - did you come straight from school? I might even know you mister k...

  • Places like Byker bank are the exception, it's mostly flat. My old commute from Crammy to Shields Road would have been a doddle fixed, especially racing buses through Longbenton.

Agree with you mister k, Crammy's pretty poor, but it was ok as a kid with all those cycle tracks and parks.

RGS boy asm? You a posh toff then?

  • I used to do a regular trip between Felling and Heaton on my old hybrid and found Byker Bank a challenge even on the granny gear.

Whenever I think what it would be like with a fixie in Newcastle I always think of that particular hill. Be interesting to have a go at that one on my 52x17 ratio, reckon it'd probably kill me.

Yes, I'm sipping brandy from the head of a rare monkey while reclining on a chaise-longue next to a roaring open fire fueled by £50 notes while whipping my butler because he's doing a shit job of polishing my brooks.

I don't think a posh toff has ever come within 50 yards of RGS, that school just produces cunts who spend the next 10 years of their life occupying a table in tiger-tiger, because they can't loaf about in the cool section of the common room anymore. (I hated that school immensely - the only good things about it were the art department, Mr. Baker who taught philosophy, and Mr. Tilbrook who taught history).

  • asm - didn't come straight form school took a couple of years out along the way. i'm 22 now.
i went to heaton manor (oh no). i know a couple of ppl from rgs tho... Laurence (guy with a mad blonde afro), Rob Blazey, Richard (Dick) Robson, Bunj (small guy with MASSIVE hair). ring any bells?

SXG - you wuss! i used to do that hill every day on a bmx when i worked at the sage!

    k

  • Ah mister K, you have the advantage of youth, when I was peddling up that hill, sage was but a twickle in Sir Fosters eye.

And besides didn't say couldn't do it, just meaning it created a bit of a sweat - that and the hill was on the way back from training, and there invariably wasn't much left in the tank.

  • ah.
maybe i'll let you off then. haha.
