Epping Forest, there's a course in Bracknell, South Downs. Failing that, go to The Cairngorms

find a golf course and start causing havoc jumping off the bunkers, if you fall off it's nice and soft in the sand, watch out for irate golfers tho.

No, because you told me about that other guy John Julietta Smith you went to school with and he didn't get given shit. It must have been something else about you.

if he meant jumps as in dirt jumping. it's bit like this
dj mtbs are usually hardtail with massive (groin) clearance, front suspension and funny looking saddles set really low on the frame...lots of skills and guts involved, but it isnt 'riding' is it -

used to regularly get the train down to petersfield and then ride into the south downs. then lived near epping forest so that was decent too. have been a few other threads that have touched on this recently, including Object17 talking about getting an SS/FG mtb thing going.
provenrad. i will be up for joining you one saturday. when i have bought a new £155 titanium mtb frame ;)

Like Provenrad said, we're going this weekend and hopefully gonna make it regular as the weather improves. Everyone's welcome to come along. I did some mountain biking a while ago, but not properly and on a shit bike so haven't really got the skills. Have you got a bike yet? ebay or singletrackworld forum might get you something second hand and cheapish.
Do you wanna jump off ramps (like the picture above) or just as part of trail riding? Either way, the best start is the basic bunny hop. This is from the mtbr forums:
Ok guys, this is my first attempt at making a tutorial of any kind so bear with me. I think it is a pretty decent guide that should get you going in no time. Requests for instructions on bunnyhopping come up all the time so I figured a video tutorial was in order. You can read all you want but unless you watch it happening I don't think reading volumes of text is going to help much. However, in addition to this video, I do advise you to read some of the instructional pages out there as there are some really good tips.
I tried to keep it real simple, though incredibly versitile the bunnyhop is actually a really basic trick. I've got several examples inside and I break it down frame by frame. In volume 2, I'll go over some other methods of bunnyhopping as well as some very trick ways to use it on the trail and maybe a quick session around town.

Brilliant, that's really helpful.
I haven't got my own bike yet and really skint at the moment... but I'll be doing my best to save a little to get something to get going with. I guess, I'll put my remaining posessions on ebay.
I'll be well up for coming when I have one and I know at least 3 other girls who want to come if that's cool. They have bikes already but haven't done much yet.
And I'm up for jumping off ramps. As well as doing other jumps. But ramps looks really good fun. Although I will have to start small and build up from there.... -

It's always the way - desire for new bike vs no money for it! Someone said in another thread that secondhand mountain bikes are going fairly cheap on ebay at the moment. Definitely cool for people to come too - I'm looking forward to getting into the countryside and seeing some greenery.
If you get really into jumping then you might want to get a specific bike, but a general pupose hardtail ought to be fine to start with.

I bought a rigid full crom mbt with stx group set for 30 squid off ebay before christmass. Not much use at all. No suspension I know but it is being used on the roads anyway. Cheap any how for a reasonable bike.
I have an 18" giaint frame + forks, headset, bottom bracket and cranks I would sell cheap if anyone wants it.

Hardtail with 100mm of travel up front is plenty for dirt jumping.
Just make sure the frame is small enough to provide plenty of crotch clearance. -

I know a few things MTBing! If you need to know anything ask away!
I took part in one of, if not the most extreme DH races in the world last year, the mega avalanche in Alp d'heuz!
Nothing like starting on top of a snow covered mountain knowing you've got an hour and a half of downhill (well 80% dh and 20% flat/uphill) with 200 other riders around you doing the same crazy shizzle.
I'm located in the south west so if anyone is in my neck of the woods give me a shout and I can take you on gentle to extreme rides if you want.
You can get some great women specific MTBs now for around £400 with disc brakes and good components. My wife rides my single speed jump bike (Commencal cro-mo) and she loves it, small frame and real simple. She did a 15 mile route on it no problems over Christmas.
