is that a vauxhall viva or hillman avenger in the background?
-

not too sure about the weinman centre pull breaks though...
-
• #7
nice, cottered cranks though. still to successfully remove a set of those.
-

i picked up a carlton corsa recently - with a view to salvaging the frame for a fixed build.
(yeah i am nervous about the cotter pin cranks. and also the front forks have a massive rake on them).
are you intending to do the same ?

Kelvin not too sure about the weinman centre pull breaks though...
they actually work really well. better than sidepull anyway.

Can we get this established once and for all please. Those are 'brakes' not 'breaks'. For god's sake...

Careful buying bits before you take the originals apart.
I've had two Carlton frames through my hands, both with different sized headsets and bottom brackets.
I did manage to successfully remove the cotter pinned cranks on the cheaper of the two, and found the BB to be a raleigh 1" size that normal BB's wont fit. I haven't yet built this up, but did manage to get a BB that fits. Search for "YST threadless" I think.

i've picked up a very similar Sun, with the same carlton-style wrap around seat stay detail. the cotter pins were super easy to tap out, the chain ring hap play on the arms so it has to go, but the BB is being a shit. same deal with a little french metropole sat next to it. on the Sun i'm planning to get rid of the braze-ons and give it a paint, but til the BB goes, its in limbo.

Looks about the same age as a Raleigh Sprite i got a few months ago.
Too big for the lady so might strip it down. See if the BB's a pain. -

@ Kelvin + mattster blaster:
See Tommy's tip about using a chisel to turn the BB cups in this thread http://www.londonfgss.com/discussion/2328/
After using some penetrant spray, chiselling worked for me.

Lower case 'g' is correct for non-believers and also polytheists.

Sorry that's me being useless and I feel ashamed of myself... Especially as it started a religous debate

A note on cotter pins: 'tapping' with a hammer may become wacking with a hammer. Support the axle with a foot long piece of wood onto the floor so you're not hammering away at the BB races.
Or even just don't fuck with it, and for that matter don't convert it, just grease a few things and sell it for €£$ to a hipster. Just a thought.
-
• #24
Yeah I'm tempted to take the brooks, polish it up and put it on ebay as a single/fixed conversion though might fall in love with it cottered or not when I get my mits on it..

whered you find it anyways?
Brother picked up this for me, no idea what the exact size it is but from a quick googling for Carlton Ten looks not too bad for a beater
