  • After getting caught in the rain this lunctime, i managed to snap my key off in my fairly new abus granit 1000cm lock this evening and have had to leave my beautiful bike locked up in my work car park which is rather dodgy.

I searched and noticed a thread about broken keys in d-locks, but thought i would ask anyway. Am I going to need to hire an angle grinder to get this bastard off?

next stop Abus site about warranty!

    Cheers All..

  • There must be a way to get the old key out using superglue and the stump of what is left?
I have an abus and the key is so chunky I can't imagine it deformed much - just a clean break?

  • Sorry - I realised that ^ doesn't read as very sympathetic.
"aaahhhhh... there, there. Have a nice cuppa and relax dearie. Things can only get better!"

  • Thanks Prav, can you rub my back as well?

Do you think the superglue thing would work? it is a clean break

  • yeah I think so?- just put a really tiny-teeny dot on the key-stub, and dab off excess with a tissue I reckon. Hold it in place at the correct angle. You may have to open the keyhole-cover with a pin first so it's doesn't get glue on it. carefully remove the broken bit, then use your spare key - presto!
you really don't want to jam up the lock with superglue..
p.s. Someone tell me if I'm being a fool here!

  • it's sure worth a try before resorting to the grinder!

even if you get the stub out a little way (will shaking the lock not do this? if it's the right way up) then you could grasp it with long-nosed pliers

  • yeh i started turning, so i think trying to get it out with pliers may be impossible..

  • good luck clefty hope you sort it

  • if the end is visable and able to get to it, get some tweasers and a scalple and have your best few goes at trying to pry the bugger out. i have used this to success on a few old locks before and if you have a spare key you can use the lock after....good luck

  • thanks guys, the lock is pretty new, gonna try in daylight tomorrow with some tweezers but am not that hopeful. looks like its a trip to HSS for me..

  • Tweezers will be really difficult! Do try superglue before the grinder kills a good lock:

  • didnt james used to just jiggle the old stub of his key in a lock with most of it broke off?

i would try the super glue before i left my bike behind

  • i would have done but it was dark and i didnt have any glue or a torch. However I'm gonna try the glue tactic tomorrow then its time for mr angle grinder
i'm getting to the point now where i just want the bastard off, plus angle grinders are fun!
my fella has some big ass bolt cutters and has bet me 20 quid that he can get through them, however he cant get them until the weekend and i dont want to wait that long.

  • stealing your own bike sounds fun... what happened? did you manage to liberate it?

:D HSS! can i come! well get the biggest grinder in the shop! ..but i think theres a boring alternative :( i think you can phone the council and they come cut it off for you, you just need to provide some ID like a passport when they come do it. Ill try find out more, my mate had to do it.

    you have a 10 meter lock? fuck me that must be heavy![/quote]hehe yeah theres also 5 other bikes locked up with it ;

  • i dont muck about me ;-)

because of where its locked (at work) there's a load of bollocks about the landlords kicking off about it the fact that i'm not insured and using heavy machinery on their property, so I'm still waiting for the locksmith to turn up, should be here at noon, hopefully he can save the lock - for the money I'm paying he bloody should do!
I'm just amazed its lasted 2 nights in that carpark without something happening to it!

  • pay him extra to cut the railing 'acedently' then we will see whos not quilfyed to break things with big sawlike things

  • Ok the bike is finally Free!
So the question is what do i replace it with, I cant say i'm overly impressed with the Abus cable locks now so am thinking of a NY Kryptonite D lock which is a similar price to replace it
Ideally i'd like the forgetaboutit big bastard chain but i can afford £90 for a lock at the moment. Having just spent that on a locksmith..

Any thoughts or past experiences with them? I'm looking to spend no more than £60 on a lock to basically leave at work.

  • I've got the Fahgettaboudit, it weighs a fucking tonne but it's all good. I've had no worries with it and I guess it's piece of mind whilst my bike is locked up

weight is the only downside with it...

  • wow that shits on wiggles price! awesome thanks Scott you're a legend!
    ordering now!

£61.19 including free postage and 10% discount on price!

  • Never tell your landlord what you are doing. Just do it they can't do anything once you have cut the lock your self.

  • oh and if anyone wants an extra 5% discount at cyclexpress, I got a discount code. :-)
