  • Hi, i've got a friend whose looking to buy a bike. She has a budget of £30-£40 (at the very most). Not looking for anything special, just something that goes (or will go with a bit of elbow grease). She said she was going to look in brick lane market on sunday for a stolen bike (her words not mine!) - trying desperately to find her a legit alternative.

    Any help much appreciated. Cheeeers.

    -Alex

  • very cheap one on gumtree.

    only £245.

  • awwospok?

(Checked gumtree, got a couple from there already. thought i'd ask here too, just incase someone has one cluttering up a shed or a corridor, that perhaps doesn't work/is in need of wheel trueing/new chain or other such sundry, thereby giving me a nice project as well as a girl an un-stolen bike.)

  • you can get an old ladies raleigh for about 15 on ebay.

  • Sort of dismissed ebay out of hand.. checked and i've found a couple. Thanks rakan.

  • I have got a 'pro bike' ladies step-through with 7-gear grip shift locked up outside my place slowly going to seed.
Would only want £20 for it but I can't find the keys to the ABUS restraining it.
Got decent tyres and a black Rolls seat too.

  • Friend of mine has a purple ladies mtb (raleigh) for sale that price. Just tell me if you want it.

  • Thanks John & Ben, I'll let her know and get back to you tomorrow!

  • Just snapped this:

    And found the key.
Just realised the bike has got crud catchers front and back and a kickstand,(yo!) semi horizontal drops too.
So I would want £30 for it.

    Anyone want Ladybike?

    Let me rephrase that:

    Who want Ladyzbike?

    ah ah ah

  • Hey that shouldn't be a problem. I reckon me and aidan will be popping round tomorrow anyway so i'll tell you then if she wants it. (I really hope she says yes!)

Thanks again for the tire by the way!

  • np

  • tell her it's all false economy buying shitty stolen bikes. she'll probably end up buying a lock in a pound shop and get it stolen 2 weeks later.

    i want cheepbike! you sell?

  • That's what i told her, i think she didn't realise she could get one legit for that sort of price. Hopefully this will convince her.

  • nb: liberated ladybike i converted:

  • she needs to address her morals, before she starts riding.

otherwise, black n' white condorman might pay her a fleeting, saliva filled visit, unexpectedly.

  • asm I reckon me and aidan will be popping round tomorrow anyway so i'll tell you then if she wants it. (I really hope she says yes!)

    ......lol!!

  • ha ha - nothing personal here (i think we've all been like this maybe?)

but what is it about people that want to get a fully working, ready to ride bike which will save them hundreds
of pounds/hours per year but are never willing to pay more than £50... It's SO weird.
friends (usually ones who have just spent £90 on a pair of jeans etc) sometimes say to me:
"yeah i don't want anything fancy - just something to get from A to B really"

Right so let me get this straight - you want something that will transport you around for free, safely, amongst the traffic,
in comfort, that fits your body dimensions, which will stop you reliably in an emergency and wont fall
apart coming down a hill at 25 mph - and you don't value that above the cost of 2 cinema tickets and a bucket of KFC...

Maybe it comes from leftover images of childhood where bicycle = kids toy = not something to spend serious money on.
Or maybe it's because it's not one of those products that gets marketed to non-cyclists in a desirable "you know you
want it" way, say like ipods/cars/dove body creams.

    ITS SO EXASPERATING!
For fucks sake spend £150 on a decent, working, not stolen second hand bike and do yourself a bloody favour!

  • ^-- Shit yeah! claps :)

  • I think it is partly the old kid toy thing and people who are not interested in bikes want a bike to be disposable.

  • TheBrick(Tommy) I think it is partly the old kid toy thing and people who are not interested in bikes want a bike to be disposable.

Maybe it's worth a bike being disposable in london as it doesn't seem like one can hold on to one for very long.

There are a few legit places in brick lane in the market stall section. Old codgers selling ex-police auction bikes. The guys on the left of the main market bit aren't dodgy I believe.

  • Mr Bungle Or maybe it's because it's not one of those products that gets marketed to non-cyclists in a desirable "you know you
want it" way, say like ipods/cars/dove body creams.

Oh shit. it's only a matter of time. The iBike.

  • pj nb: liberated ladybike i converted:

pj, what are you gonna do with that bike? just interested like...

  • That's a sweet bike, PJ...

I've been trying to get somethinglike that for my missus, but keep getting fcucking outbid on the bay...

  • i found the frame on bethnal green road, it was fucked and on the way to destruction so i set it free. then i converted it.

    it's already spoken for.

  • Thanks to MA3K (has she contacted you yet?) Will be winging your way soon with a hipflask (or maybe bottle) of spirit/liquor of your choice. Oh, and another bike in need of a headset pressed & steerer cut down (mine this time :), if that's ok? Maybe mon/tues/wed of next week.

Mr. Bungles, what you say is widely true, but if you were a 19 y/o girl with little/no experience riding a bike in traffic (but keen on learning), with an exceptionally limited budget (being an art student and all), a stolen bike is a very tempting solution. One that is wrong (which is why i went to such efforts to find her a legit one for a similar price) mind! You're right, before you become a cyclist you have no idea how much a bike costs, and you definitely don't even consider the fact that i might not fit you like a glove... but £150? I got an old raleigh road bike that served me very well indeed for £80 last year. £150 is a pretty large sum to spend for a student when they aren't sure if they'll actually be riding it in a month's time!

....Oh and don't worry i'll be escorting her until she finds her feet, so to speak!
