  • Did anyone watch Top Gear last night? They had a race to see who could cross london the fastest: James in a car, The Stig using public transport, Richard on a bike and Jeremy by boat. Ultimately the bike came first. Though it was hilarious watching Richard Hammond swear at the buses and the abundance of traffic lights.

  • I saw that. It was good. They called it the end of Top Gear... hahaha

  • I also saw it. It was great - I hope more people cycle as a result!

  • I read that Richard Hammond is a keen cyclist. And the £1800 specialised carbon bike he was riding in the show is actually his rather than one I imagined he'd borrowed for the feature.

  • they should have a race with a courier at some point, then they will see how fast someone can really go on a bike in london.

  • Yeah I just saw that there before dinner. Brilliant! He's certainly an angry cyclist... but who doesn't swear at buses?

  • Yeah great show. They should do a race of some kind across London racing a small 'city' car against a messenger.

  • danger joel they should have a race with a courier at some point, then they will see how fast someone can really go on a bike in london.

whilst they were introducing the piece i actually antipated a race with a courier...

  • I'm sure Hammond was just hamming up all the swearing and shit for the cameras. No keen cyclists swear at shit that much. They're used to it and only swear when it counts (like twats in 4wds not knowing what single file is)
He said he was doing 19mph in that tunnel.. seems slow to me.
    £1800 commuter bike? WTF?
The Stig was meant to be on the Tube at 8.30am Monday, peak hour and yet the platforms and trains were practically empty - methinks bullshit.

As for boat speed limits.. http://www.gallionspointmarina.co.uk/cruisingthethames.html#four
Until fairly recently there wasn't a speed limit on the non-tidal River but there was a general rule that a boat should not exceed a brisk walking pace which is roughly 4 to 5 miles per hour.
However, there is now a statutory speed limit of 8 kilometres per hour over the bed of the river. It was generally accepted and recognised that a speed limit was in all our interests as excessive wash, created by speeding boats, caused untold damage to the riverbank, wildlife and moored up boats (wash can still be a problem even with a speed limit). But it was controversial for two reasons: the units of measurement selected and the way in which it was to be applied.
On the roads in the UK we do not use the metric system: all distances are measured in miles and speeds given in miles per hour. As far as boats are concerned we, like a number of other countries, measure speed in knots (nautical miles per hour). In their wisdom however, the authorities on the Thames have decided to use kilometres per hour, a unit to which many of us cannot relate. So , for those like us:-
    8 Kilometres per hour = 5 miles per hour = 4.3 knots

My gf's brother happens to be a van courier and was laughing at the route the guy in the car took, ie. through Hammersmith Broadway rather than using the Hammersmith Flyover as well as driving through Piccadilly.

Anyway, the bike would have won anyway but I reckon most of that segment was bollocks.

  • "most of that segment was bollocks"

^ true of most things on top gear. But i still love it!!

  • don't get me started on how they've been trying to kill a toyota hilux...

  • top gear used to be a motoring consumer's prog.

remember? they used to test ordinary cars, not much else.

over the years it's morphed into a boy's own adventure and gadget show, and is all the better for it.

I still watched The Accidental Angler last night instead.

  • I watched trampolining world championships! I didn't even know there was such a thing and yet it's been going for 25 years!
Britain got bronze.. I wonder how much coverage they get in the papers..?

  • I've watched the naked female trampolining championships.

    it's better than top gear

  • i like Top Gear

  • i also like top gear....who else likes top gear....i like top gear.

  • you'll love Dave!

Top Gear for breakfast lunch and dinner :D

  • dave loves dave.....and hops love dave...

  • i like Dave too

  • not in a gay way though

  • dave likes dave in a gay way...

  • It seems odd that most people on the "some love for cars" hated them yet everyone seems to love Top Gear...I personally love both. I also quite like bikes

  • its quite different to what we see as every day cars....like the cars that cut us up at the junctions.......alot of the people who watch it are not really into cars, its just good entertainment.

  • il tell you what seems odd.....discussions on londonfgss mirror post made by bill on moving target or visa versa...and same with bike snobs

  • God knows why they named it 'Dave'. Muppets.

I gotta say, I love cars. I love motorcycles. I love bikes.
