Crank Brothers egg beaters pedals

  • im getting some egg beater pedals from crank brothers.
im also getting cleats with them

will the cleats fit on any cycling shoes?

  • if they've got these for the cleats, then you'll be fine.

they won't fit on road shoes that have three holes only.

  • i'hv broken mine in 4months

    spd might be better

  • Used SPDs since '92 so I'm a bit biased but like most things from the big S they work brilliantly and are relaible. Heard so many woes re; Eggs, especially bearings failing and pedals falling apart at the worst moment...

    Sorry!

  • It does say in the manual for Eggbeaters that the bearings need to be replaced after very few miles. I can't remember the exact amount. It's because the bearings are so tiny and hence wear quicker.

  • And are bushed I believe, at least at one end...

  • how few? i have le beaters de l'oeuf

  • I like the way Eggbeaters look - very minimalist. But if there's not a lot of pedal to put your weight on, it's probably not very comfortable to ride with for any length of time. In fact, I imagine it's a bit like pressing down on a nail. Yes or no? SPDs for me.

  • Yeah, they look awesome.

They are designed for muddy cross/mtb riding, so that riders can shed mud off the pedal very easily and be able to clip in and out.

  • i've been riding mine solidly for over a year without any problems. the cleats are a bit too soft for my liking, but the premium cleats (£3 or so more expensive than the regular ones) are actually holding up a lot better.

  • the broken one in the picture must be one of the cheap tinfoil models..? i can't imagine the stainless steel ones snapping like that.

I like egg beaters as they are soo easy to get out of, as i'm a bit of a spaz sometimes when it comes to unclipping, so i find them reassuring.
Also, they're not at all uncomfortable if you have some decent stiff shoes.

  • No problems with mine yet, after a year of riding. Did 80 miles on them the other day and dont find them uncomfortable either.

  • I've used spd's shimano's (single sided) touring pedals and thought were good. I defected to egg beaters because of their minimalist look and the four sided entry system but actually got fucked off taking second pair of shoes everywhere so my recommendation is toe clips all the way!

  • I've had the cheapo beaters on mine for about 3 months now, no problems as yet but they do seem a bit flimsy. Wish i'd gone for the stainless versions. MTB forums also seem to agree that the cheap ones are prone to snapping. I also worry that they're allen-key only (can't use pedal spanner to remove) so if you round the allen hole, you're stuffed. That said, they do look ace and they're piss easy to clip in/out.

  • i've just started on the candy one's. They seem like a very good compromise. Still easy to get in and out of but the platform makes them feel more substantial.

  • RESURRECT!
Can I just check a compatibility question:

I ordered that exact set up a couple weeks ago from the states for combinded price of £50 and I sure hope they are compatible. They're getting sent to my address in the states. I think I got it from beyondbikes.com

I'm pretty sure they are - I'm just being paranoid before I hit the 'buy' button... I never make any decision without checking it's alright with the lfgss crew.

  • Looks like it'll be fine to me. They're just bog standard two bolt cleats.

  • no reason why not

  • There's also an adapter: http://www.crankbrothers.com/3hole_adapter.php?itemId=74660

or a three point cleat: http://www.crankbrothers.com/3hole_cleat.php?itemId=

    if you have road shoes.

    Still prefer ATACs, though...
