  • Hi there, I have written on here before (but cannot remmeber my password/username!)

I am considering gettting a Condor Pista or a Tempo to use for the commute to work. Can anyone reccomend what specs to go for. Anyone ride a Condor here?

    Gear ratio?
    Hubs?
    etc etc,

i'm a bit new to fixed gears so any help would be really appreciated! I am getting the bike on a cycle to work scheme (so save 40%!) so can now afford a new bike!

  • what the hell is a condor tempo???

  • ^^^^^ Hippys maintenance routine - whack it with a big orange hammer - he builds his wheels the same way

  • i've heard it comes with a free pipe, sandals, and lifetime membership of the CTC.

  • wayne: I still don't own a hammer. I just use the big wrench I have to beat stuff into submission.

pj: SOLD! Where do I sign?

  • on the piece of paper. move yr beard out of the way, take yr pen out of your panniers and sign away,

  • Back on Topic.

I ride a Pista, an '05. I dunno about the Tempo, that wasn't around until recently, you could also conside the Potenza if you are feeling flush (this used to be called the Pista EOM but was re-branded last year) its a bit lighter and a lot stiffer.

The stock build for a pista has Mavic CXP22 wheels, so you should consider allowing for an upgrade to CXP33s or OpenPro's (I went for OpenPro's). The Condor Selle Italia saddle is like sitting on an RSJ, so allow for a saddle upgrade to (I'd go for whatever you have found comfortable in the past).

As for ratios, its a personal thing. What are your habits on a geared bike, are you a grinder or a spinner? Something in the low 70's is a good starting point, but new cogs are cheap, so you can experiment (a flip flop hub helps here) - although if you make big changes you'll need to adjust your chain length. I wouldn't go above 80 inches unless you have thighs like Marrows, and lower than 68 will have you spinning like a mofo (or like hippy) on the down hill stretches.

Try and go to Condor when they are not busy as you'll get better service. They've got a measuring rig and can sort you out for frame size and stem length etc.

Oh, and don't buy one from Halfords Bike Hut, as they will just sell you a stock bike with no chance to upgrade at marginal cost

  • Speak to Nimbhus / search under his threads. He's just bought a new one (and likes it a lot on all accounts).

Does a CAMRA membership also come with the Tempo?

  • willski but new cogs are cheap

condor ones are £20 quid a pop and chainring £40. how is that cheap?

i thought you need a pink shirt as well?!

  • hippy love thats dudes commentary from the photo you posted above. yadda, yadda, picked up couple mph, shorter average ride time...........for his 6 min commute. wow!!

  • they do cheaper ones for 8quid.
    AND
you can always find sprockets for 3quid or less at bike jumbles.

  • i have a pista 07 i pimped mine but if on a budget i would upgrade the chain and rear cog from standard everything else is good stuff. the condor carbon wrap seatpost is also a cheap upgrade worth doing.

i ended up with dura ace brake, non anatomical deda bars, grey open pro's, cane creek carbon cross lever, brooks swift saddle, easton carbon post. it's replacement value is now £1200.

the stock saddle isn't up to much but the miche drivetrain is good apart from the basic chain and unbranded cog. i use an eai and an izumi chain, much quieter and better chainline with eai cog.

  • edmundane they do cheaper ones for 8quid.

condor owners don't dive through cardboards boxes at jumbles for £3 cogs ;)

  • Mouse Does a CAMRA membership also come with the Tempo?

This is beginning to sound like an offer I can't refuse.

  • Surely Condor riders would be looking for something more like..

  • Or a recommendation to go to Rapha for all of their clothing needs. Or Assos if they want something for every temperature possible on earth

Exactly... Their butlers do it for them!

I'll be trading mine in for a Fuji.

    I hear they're the kit.

More like this personally, but I get the impression I'm not a typical Condor owner :S

  • back OT:

the tempo has forward facing horizontal dropouts

    does it not?

and mudguards, and eight sets of bottle bosses

and is built like a brick outhouse in case you want to go on a 32 mile ride for 18 hours.

as we mentioned before, it comes with camra and CTC membership, lifetime subscription to Saga, free packet of sanatogen, 10% off all Eric Clapton CD purchases, sack of tena lady for the wife, front, back and side ortlieb panniers and complementary bag of werther's originals for those wintry days when you can't ride the bike so have to ride the grandchildren round the living room instead.

This may be a subject for a seperate thread (lets see how it goes) but,

What are the attributes of a typical Condor owner?

    I'll start the list

    1. Devilishly handsome
    2. Witty
    3. Charming

All meant in good fun. If I had the cash I'm sure I'd have bought a Condor Pista at the time because although people here say they're a rip off I quite like 'em.

Oh, that is me after all.

At the time, it was the cheapest alu road/track frame I could find (I had wheels and stuff already), plus it was my lbs. I got a reasonable deal at £300 for frame+forks+headset. And the 'rubberized' matt black paint job looked like it would last.

Times have changed a bit since then though...
