Another tedious hub question

Posted on
  • So everyone's getting new wheels at the moment. Anyone had experience of these?

Budget is pretty tight, so it's really a question of whether I should just go for the SystemX/Ambrosio option from over here or if Milwaukee might be worth a pop.
Apologies if I missed this being discussed elsewhere.

    Cheers!

  • Hovis built up some wheels using those hubs, I think they're supposed to be quite good. Also they come in a pleasing array of colours :)

  • i believe (not positive) they're just rebranded IRO/formula hubs. i've been told that in the UK systemx is sort of the same as formula - just a decent, sealed bearing track hub.

i've been told (not sure if this works) that you can buy a formula hub (or the like) and spend about $10-20 on phil wood bearing, and it will roll much smoother.

  • The Milwaukee hubs aren't the same as System-Ex, that much I can tell you, so if IRO and Formula are the same as System Ex, then.. you do the maths.

  • They look very nice, especially in black or brown. The flange cutouts look different to Formulas though and I doubt they would make them different for a smallish contract.

    [puts on cheeky hat]

If you do order any though can you get me a couple of these lockrings (seriously!) tacked onto your order - they look excellent.

  • Max, where does one buy one of these cheeky hats?

  • LOL!

And I take it back about the hubs - they are Formulas I think - Ben's sells them here:

Other thing is they are all flip-flop. May be better going for fixed/fixed.

  • Those milwaulkee ones are the same as the budget on-ones here

I heard the IRO type (zenith, ambrosio/system x?) were better.

  • Milwaukee are not Formula and not System Ex.. you can see that just by looking at the flange cutouts.

They do, on the other hand, look like a much nicer finished On-One version.

  • the flange holes look like the sjs ones too... though it's got a different profile in the middle

  • Cheers all - sorted now, gone for the 50 quid Ambrosios.
Next problem is trying to calculate the spoke length I need. Found plenty of spoke calculators but can't seem to find the specs for these hubs anywhere. Anyone know what they might be or where to find them (I've probably missed something very obvious somewhere!)

  • search for "ambrosio" on the forum, i've once posted the same question the hub details are all in there courtesy of MA3K

  • nice cheers!

  • System-X(Ambrosio) specs aren't any place I could find when I built my wheels. You will probably have to measure it manually.

  • LOL.

    I've forgotten them.

  • Did you buy at Velomax?

    In that case very obvious!

    ;)

Still trying to decide on hubs too...

  • No, bought from UK Bike store, which has NO info!
MA3K, you originally said 59 flange diameter and 31 flange to centre.
When calculating with both these and the specs from the ^^^^^link above ^^^^^ it's all coming out with the same answer in terms of spoke length, so I'm ok now - just have to keenly await the parts and build the fcukers!
