Which square drive BB for 68mm bottom bracket

  • Do shimano do any relatively cheap square drive BBs?
All the ones I've seen are tapered square.
Any alternatives/suggestions for a 110-113 square drive BB under £15 appreciated.

  • Confused by the question. Square taper is the original type of interface (bar cotter pins of course). Other (more modern) types are splined.

IMHO the best BB ever made is the UN71/72/73 series Shimano. They will almost last a lifetime, fit and forget with velvet smoothness and weight around 260 - 270g and cost typically £18. Superceded by later plastic cup models but you can still find them on ebay (from Germany too).

+1. these things are cheap, but durable and just awesome.

also, fuck those newer splined BBs. i trust 4 solid sides much more than 8-12 dinky little splines.

  • This reminded me of a site - finally found it, useful info here:

Yes, the UN71 - UN72 or UN73 like Max said.

This is a puzzling statement ?

"Hey does anyone know where I can get a red hat?"

"All the ones I have seen are red"

    ? ! :)

    Truvativ Square LE - 68mm/113mm - £9.99
    Shimano LX UN54 Sqr Taper 68mm/110mm £14.99

    Both available from Chain reaction

  • The reason I asked was because I replaced the BB on my Peugeot BBT framed racer which had a cup and cone BB. However, the profile of this axle end appears to be square, compared to tapered square for the shimano BB-UN26. So I assumed there must be two type of BB square and tapered square. Maybe I assumed wrong.
I would like to use the original cranks as they are much lighter, but trying to fit these on the shimano BB-UN26, they dont appear to go in deep enough, and I dont want to bugger them up (square peg round hole comes to mind). Suggestions/thoughts most welcome.

  • you know what brand cranks are those?
shimano BB's are JIS taper, which are thicker than ISO taper (e.g. campy, miche)
if they don't go deep enough the cranks that came with your pug they'll be better off taking ISO taper... think someone posted a link to a really cheap campy one for under £15 you can find it on gbcycles.co.uk

then you've got to look out for the length now. if a shimano 110mm gives you a perfect chainline you'll definitely want a longer ISO taper one... i can't tell you how much longer though... no experience with that...

  • Thanks edmundane, that'll explain the difference.

  • I think GB do one even cheaper - Mirage about £8. An ISO crank will go on a JIS taper about 4mm less.
