  • Does anyone have a Maillard hub? I have got an old maillard flip-flop hub, which I've been building up. I've got a freewheel which screwed on ok to it...so now I want to get the fixed side sorted out as well. I know that I need a French thread lockring. But does anyone know if a standard (English) thread sprocket fits on? Has anyone had any experience of it?

  • i have one, sprocket goes on fine, but when i had it i didn't put a french lockring so the threads are wasted now... so good that you know!

just try it on if you have a spare sprocket... should fit

  • Hey... How did the Maillard hub turn out?

    Are they a good buy?

  • not really, hard to get nuts for them, hard to get sprockets and lockring for em. other than that nice.

  • ro-LAND Hey... How did the Maillard hub turn out?

    Are they a good buy?

they aren't worth much money to be honest... don't plan on paying much for them. i've seen them go for silly prices on ebay.

  • dogsballs not really, hard to get nuts for them, hard to get sprockets and lockring for em. other than that nice.

AH... I actually asked about the thread on them, and was told they had "standard threads".

    What sprocket/lockring would I need?

  • french!

  • if you read my post i tried an english thread sprocket it went on with no probs. it's about getting the french lockring. parkers international have them, they are the same lockrings that go on mavic ellipse track wheels. possibly the only reason they're still being made...

  • didn't you have trouble stripping a thread, though? or was this english lock-ring?

  • i stripped the lockring threads, not the sprocket threads.

  • Campy lockrings fit Ok :0)

  • NOOOO.

do you skid with it? trackstand with it? if yes, mixing lockrings is a NO NO. it's even worse than a suicide hub with loctite. lockring threads are all just a tiny tiny tiny little bit different. they will all go on ok at first. but then you're fscked. i have tried it, no one challenge me! ride fast and brakeless with it you're dead the next week.

  • here are the numbers. if you don't read them properly it can cost your life.

    English/ISO 33.53mm x 24 TPI; Italian 33.5mm x 24 TPI; Bloody French 33 mm x 1.0 mm.

so sticking either english or italian on a french hub will fsck you up proper.

  • Cheers for the warning, edmundane.

  • no worries mate, if wasn't for a quiet road i would have almost killed myself i don't want anyone to try that.

  • Edmundane, what happened when you tried to put the bog standard lockring on? Did the threads strip as the lockring was tightened or was the damage done at a later date?

The wheels on my bike are built around Maillard hubs. I've been riding on them for the last month or so. The thing is, even though I've changed and altered just about everything on the bike, I've not had cause to do anything to my rear wheel. The French thread issue had crossed my mind before, but this post made me realise that I've been totally reliant on the previous owner of the wheels having done things right.

What I'd like to know is this: using the bike most days, would it be obvious if the wrong lockring had been used?

  • Probably only if you undid the lockring. If you haven't got the right lockring, there wil be play in the thread, you would be able to rattle the lockring a little (not much mind), side to side.

  • soweto:

i had dura ace lockrings on, which are english thread and it is loose. but once you tighten it up quite tight (which anyone should anyway) you wont feel any play because it's quite a small difference within those 5 or 6 threads. worse thing is after putting the cog on, there's only 3 threads left for the lockring to catch on.

it slipped a few times whilst trackstanding. and when i do a big skid the cog will just come off. and the lockring threads end up totally fscked. that's how i realised something's wrong. posted a question here, tramps gave me the answer and i know i destroyed a hub.

    so to answer your question:

i think i'm probably the only case i know of a stupid person putting the wrong lockring on. quite a lot of ppl have these hubs (and obviously bought the whole wheelset 2nd hand) and i haven't really heard anyone had the same problem.

in my case of wrong lockring: if you don't trackstand, don't skid, don't back pedal too much, with rotafix you should be able to get it on reasonably tight to not fall off during normal riding . what remained of my hub at the moment is a 17t cog that's totally stuck after a bit of an over the top rotafix. i wanted to free the cog but no matter what i try i couldn't get it off... yet.

  • Thanks very much. Poring over your misfortune (again!) can't be a lot of fun, but that was much appreciated. I've not noticed any slippage or movement when I'm trackstanding, so I reckon my lockring is probably OK. If this confidence turns out to be misplaced, I'll try and persuade one of the nurses to make a post on my behalf. :-P

  • So the conclusion of the story. I finished the wheel a few weeks ago... I then had a day of joy with a fixed wheel bike hurrah. Then the cheap cheap French thread lockring from SJS cycles stripped itself to pieces in an embarassing fashion. Suddenly no drive...Fortunately not going to fast/braking. Now I have a Mavic one from Parkers international. It's great and I have no problems skid stopping, pedal mashing etc!

The sprocket is a standard one.

PS Note to self. don't check chain tension while the chain is moving. Chain around chainring. Chainrung punches through fingernail. Result = pain

    I

I couldn't fit an English thread lockring on at all. You'd soon notice it was wrong....Sorry Ed!

  • stonster . Now I have a Mavic one from Parkers international.

Could I have a link to this lockring, please?

  • Here you go.

    Mavic Lockring

  • Smashing. Thanks. Can't hurt to have one in the spares box.

  • I've recently obtained a rear wheel built on a Maillard hub. It came with a Dura-Ace 14t sprocket on one side, and an un-branded 16t sprocket on the other. Only one lock ring on the hub.

The lockring screws down fine onto the un-branded 16t sprocket, however the Dura-Ace sprocket is thicker and the lockring won't screw fully down

Firstly, would it be ok to run the lockring on the Dura-Ace sprocket ? I'm guessing it's probably a bad idea.

Secondly, does anyone have a source for the Mavic lockrings ? Parkers don't seem to carry them anymore.
