Cycle Scheme

Won 1 ticket to Paris on the new Eurostar (why not two I have no idea... that's going on Ebay for a starters) for suggesting the sycle scheme to the company I work for. my reckoning is that they'll set it up through Evans or Cycle Surgery even though I desperatly tried to plug Brixton and Holloway cycles that would fit in with our campany image (we're a charity) but I don't think they'll go for either. Anyway... no need for a bike as i've a Fuji track that I'm going to keep for a year at the very least but say if I wanted to purchase a new frame in a years time, would any of these two (Evans or CS) order me in something tasty or would I be limited to what they usually stock?

Speak to Holborn Evans and there's a guy there who rides a Jackson he picked up at Putney Cycles. He seemed dead nice and if you can reach him I'm sure he will go out of the way to help get you stuff that they may not normally stock.

If you go for cyclescheme instead of the Evans version there are a few independent shops that participate. It isn't just Cycle surgery.

cool. It;s definatley the cycle scheme and not evans ride2work thingy. Does that mean I could use any shop under the scheme and not just 1 outlet. Hope so as a BJ frame when the Fuji fails me would be fantastic... but a long way off i reckon!

There's a list of shops on the cyclescheme website. (Includes Condor, Cavendish, Brixton Cycles and BLB, among others). The only rules are that the purchase has to be a complete bike, so you can't buy just the frame. Of course you could buy a BJ frame with cheap components and flog them on eBay.

If you want a BJ then Putney cycles stock em and deffo do the cyclescheme -

think they'll get other bits in for your bj build under the same invoice

You'll be lucky to get full carbon for a grand - my Wiler Mortirolo was GBP1499, though there's always special offers I guess. Bicycle Doctor in Manchester had a carbon Bianchi down from GBP1600 to 999 this summer...

apparently shops dont do the cyclescheme on sale items. ill be using my cyclescheme voucher on the 08 wilier mortirolo veloce in a couple of weeks. decided to go for full carbon for a crisp ride!

if only the big online shops had cyclescheme. the Focus Cayo from wiggle and Cube full carbon bikes from chainreaction are excellent value. good reviews as well.

epic cycles are on cyclescheme i think and they spec the bike to how you want it (shimano or campy, crank type, size, cassette choice, stem size, etc). the argon18 full carbon's good value there as well.

But you are right about it need to be on special. Limited choice would mean adding more to the £1k allowed in Cycle Scheme.
Add another £500-£1000 and the choice becomes painful.

That be the Wilier Mortirolo Veloce but with a Centaur chainset as I don't do compact...

the one im getting, mortirolo veloce, comes with a compact chainset. plan on tackling big sportives next year so id rather not run out of gears! plus i dont race so im goin for driveset that'd take me the distance instead.

just go cyclesurgery and test some there. staff look bored from about 6ish so they'd be more than happy to let you test ride one or two...you're in first names terms with them arent ya?

While we're on the the topic of chainsets (thought it'd never happen at lfgss) can someone clarify for me what compact means. It seems that it's better for climbing because it gives you some lower gears and takes a few off the top. Kind of like a hybrid gear set between a single and a triple without the extra weight and complication of the triple. Am I right in guessing it's good for people who prefer to spin in lower gears and not mash big gears. After riding fixed for a few months I now want to get a geared bike for more long distance runs at the weekends and think a compact sounds good.

You've pretty much got it there - couldn't clarify it any better myself. I've always been a bit of a big gear masher myself I confess...

fatboyralph: They might see my angry eyes daily at the moment but I don't like shopping at cycle surgery. Well, it's real hit and miss with service.
Better than Evans but that's not hard. I wish I had an independant shop near me (I do, but they're commuter crowd only).

It's not that exact bike, same frame but I spec'd some other bits. I've got some touches of red on it (tape, tyres and saddle) and better wheels (Phils laced to Open Pros with DT double butted spokes). So the colour scheme is black, silver and red with white BJ logo. I'll get some pics up soon as I get my camera back from a friend.
