I I took a long wet ride yesterday and my Brooks ist now dry yet pale and blunt after it dried.
What do I use best to bright up and shine again but not to stain my jeans on the rides after ?
The Brooks Maintenance kit for 9 quid surely is a joke. Or not ? Use Clear shoe polish ?
    moisturizer ? Advise please

  • supposedly hippo likes nivea for men as it gives him the feel of babys bum

what do you mean by "blunt"?
what color was it originally? i think staining (from the saddle) is mostly an issue if the saddle itself is stained (like a new black saddle, for example), but if you were riding it wet and it didn't stain you then, i dunno why a leather conditioner would be a problem now. did you proofhide it?

proofhide ? I just put it on an rode it for 4 months

  • i use hide food, it's similar to the brooks stuff but cheaper made by a company called propert's it's got parrafin wax beeswax and lanolin in it like the brooks stuff. it's not got any colour in it like boot polish (wouldn't use boot polish on a brooks)
can't remember where i got it from though.

if it's raining i stuff a carrier bag up between the rails this stops a lot of the watter getting through to the leather.

  • after getting wet, my (honey) Brooks always looks pale and dull for a couple of days afterwards - it may feel dry, but I just think it takes ages to fully dry. The shine and normal colour come back soon enough without any additional treatment (though I do smear on a bit of proofride every couple of months).

  • I usually feed my brooks a lamb caserole after a ride. It laps it up.

  • Thanks everyone. especially the carrier bag hint.

if I only could get the tin open.. grrrrrr

  • Yes - as per Mr Smith - a beeswax mix, there is another brand called 'Snowproof' or something similar. Also use a little all year round as it also prevents the leather eventually cracking from sun exposure. If you really want to do a job on it you can melt it in with a hairdryer! (but not if the saddle is wet, wait for it to dry first, wet leather heated cracks, let it dry out slowly). You will find that with a few coats it will become waterproof. After it has soaked in/hardened rub it with a cloth to buff up and remove any excess.

  • thanks zippie. I will try it. but that obviously is bigger job cause I then plan on doing the underneath so that the water that comes
through the invisible fenders wont soak in. But for now I got a shiny new looking sattle again that just got a nudge more character
    Cheers

    That just worked great !
just did as advised. One tin of proofide now soaked into my Team Pro saddle. From bottom to top. I put the saddle & proofide tin on 50 degree in the oven and worked the liquid wax in with a cloth !
Priceless piece of advice to a waterproof brooks !
    Thanks !

  • No problem, you are welcome, I am glad it helped.

  • I used Nickwax - I had some hanging around - but I think you've got the idea by now.

The next problem you may encounter is selvedge denim rubbing blue on your saddle :o(

  • denim?

    denim, sir!?

    have you run mad!

denim has no place in the wardrobe of a cyclist.

  • I'm just trying to get down with those East London hipsters ;o)

  • they'll never accept a westie like you..

    get used to it.

they just wouldn't understand fine wines, house prices and the benefits of upgrading from Condor stock parts

  • If they ventured onto my land I'd have them shot.

  • like the filthy dogs that they are sir!

  • take it into condor, leave it by the counter, as the bloke behind the counter say's "excuse me sir" just wave dismissively saying " just do it won't you" in your best tory boy voice.

  • You've seen me in there before, haven't you?

  • I use Nikwax on my Brooks. You can get it from most motorcycle stores as its used on bike leathers. Comes in a tin like boot polish or as a liquid in a can. Softens and nourishes the leather while leaving a water resistant wax layer. i think it's about 6 quid a tin but'll last for ages. HTH

  • RPM denim has no place in the wardrobe of a cyclist.

Correct - jeans should be kept on the floor in a pile. By the time they reach the bottom of the pile they should be good to wear again.

i used to have this stuff for doing my hiking boots, loved the smell!!

  • My sister gave me some horse saddle stuff once that she got from work, it worked really well. You have to set fire to it first though to get it runny. Now i use proofhide 'cause Momentum gave it to me with a saddle i bought from him. Seems to do the trick.
