Anyone recommend a decent jacket?

  • Something about £40. Preferably bright because I'm going to be riding late in the evenings quite often now, and waterproof obviously too.

Doesn't need to be super-breathable, because my ride is only 20-25 minutes anyway.

    Ta.

  • i ride in a north face hyvent something or other, its basically a wind and waterproof bad boy, works lovely with a hoodie, turn up lovely and warm. i dunno about colors though, mines in black but they had a whole selection when i bought it, don't remember how much it was i gt money off though, its not what you know its who you know!

  • You could have a Protective Victoria for fifty-nine quid. It'll keep you as dry as the desert and just as warm too. I've got the old model, with the slightly dodgy netting on the inside. But fear not! I hear that's been sorted out on this year's jacket. The cut's a bit more generous than Protective's other stuff.

It's available in Day-Glo yellow, red and black. I've got the black one cos: A) I'm a miserable bastard. B) Too much Scotchlite makes you look like the worst sort of bespectacled middle-age commuter. Happy shopping!

  • well I have a Northface Stowaway Paclite. Which is almost like the Hyvent but can be pulled back into one of the side pockets to 18x10x3cm.
However it now sells at 120quid.
I know its off the budget, but you always get what you pay for my Grandfather said ...
That trusted piece of equipment followed me through West-China, Tibet and Nepal for Trekking for an entire year and for two years of cycling since.
Its a very versatile windbreaking jacket and works like Parka if worn with a thick Jumper too.
It is worth every pence. I would buy it again any time

  • http://www.endura.co.uk/ I've got one of their £50 ones. Does the trick. Did Dunwich, Southend, etc.
Don't really like paying more for something that just gets covered in shit through winter, but all these 'breathable' people must be onto something.. bigger bank accounts methinks :)

yeah.. I bought all the clothing first and thats why I ride a bike that is worth your wheelset

Come on you only liked the Ladies in the Womenwear section in Lycra ! :)

  • Im about to buy a northface jacket, so will be parting with my freestyle goretex bright yellow thing. If you are interested in that let me know.

Dont know if they sell them anymore but its a few years old and rrp'd for around 100 i think.

  • ooohhh... i'm into that, rakan, although i reckon first dibs should go to eeehhhh. if not, i should be able to get a friend going to the states to get me a jacket soon....i used to have a north face hyvent too (black) but it got nicked when i was travelling a couple of years back. for colour, i wear an old builders reflective vest thing that i 'found' by the side of the road one time. but you can pick 'em up in a merchants for about 3 quid. so go for style, i sez, in terms of jackets :)

You wanna know why so many roadies swear by Assos???

    They hope to meet her.

  • In the budget jackets you may want to check out the Altura Nevis or Endura Convert. Both are decent, highly-rated jackets with good visibility options:

The Nevis in particular is a really popular jacket with London Commuters.

  • If you are tall and slim then go for something Italian like Armani. If you are a stockier build Hugo Boss is better as they are cut for German customers. If you are not so tall, French or Spanish is better option; perhaps Agnes B or Armand Bassi.

  • Chainreaction have loads on offer,

I got a top of the range Gill for 80-odd notes last year.

    Still got them on offer.

    Thank you Trinny.

And what would Madam recommend for the gifted descenders and sprinters among us?

  • Cool, cheers for the advice/recommendations everyone. I've got the morning off today and a massive gap in my timetable this afternoon, so I'm going to head round to a few shops.

Thanks for offering, although I need to buy one today - got to ride to Waterloo late tomorrow evening, and then ride back home from Basingstoke station. I'm working during the day tomorrow, so can't go out shopping for one. dOcA looks like they're interested.

Where from? Was looking at tall the bike specific Gore stuff but it's mad expensive... Wanna try and pick something up in NY next week...

  • I like this one cos it has lots of reflecty bits for the winter. Also the high neck bit is comphy and i like the all-round pocket

You can get it for £50 somewhere... ribble maybe?

    Descenders should wear Kenzo.

Sprinters... it depends Cippo has modelled for Armani, but I were Backstedt or Hushovd I'd go bespoke every time.

  • get a desert camo US army gore tex. i take it you dont ride in the desert so they'll see you coming a mile off. about £30 on the 'bay of pigs

  • I have a Foska jacket, and it's jolly good.

bought in at globetrotter in germany. Not sure if they have a branch in the UK.
I am sure they have it in any Northface Store to this day.

  • Just bought an Altura jacket from Putney Cycles (this one: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx?Cat=cycle&ProdID=5360025729&N=Altura%20Nevis%20Waterproof%20Jacket). Same price as Wiggle so not bad.

First impressions: feels comfy riding with just a cotton t underneath. Might invest in a couple of decent base layers and just change when I get to uni. It's so bright (high vis), so that should reduce my chances of being mowed down in the evenings!

  • Just thought I'd bump this as I've been after a waterproof for a while.

Ribble have the altura night vision for £47 at the moment:
