they generally come manufactured like that, you'll only remove the finish using a brake, and it'll squeal like hippy when you take his food off him...:P

iff you chose to run a breake on a non-mechined rim it will not work, and it will mark your rim up. my ffreind tryed it on her kerin with non-mechined deep Vs she hit a kerb... it was funny.
10 points if some one can geuss what city im in

austin? that's where I'd be.

chicago was 17 hours ago (by train)...
why wyould any one go to texas...

you can buy deep vs with a machined surface. costs about £2 more for the rim on its own.
-

The rims on my Paddy Wagon weren't machined.
Cople of decent wet rides and they sorted themselves out. Front isn't a problem thereafter, rear gets messy if you dont readjust the brake every time you tension the chain.
So chuck the rear brake before you ride the thing.

just buy machined in the first place. i've got a white machined front with ambrosia hub, if anyone wants to swap.

Off course it will work. Machined braking surface has only been around for 10/15 years. It will just take a little while to wear in the sides of the rim to create your own braking surface. Be sure to adjust your brakes very well though so that you don't get brake marks all over the place.

That's what I said ;-P

dale (dogsballs) i still want to swap!
am in oxford though.....Jos- how do you mean set up the brakes so there are no marks?
-
• #14
how trashed is the rim though with the brake marks??
-
• #15
they are marked but its only been ridden once or twice so not too substantial i think. Its sitting in my room atm.
-
• #16
cool, well bring it down next time in london. i noticed that the rear hub is black, so it won't split a pair.

• #17
htay Jos- how do you mean set up the brakes so there are no marks?
Just pay extra attention when you install the brake pads so that you get the minimal amount of wear on the rim. Make sure they are horizontally etc...
-
• #18
it will. the front is golden.
WIll foto it soon. promise.
-
• #19
oooo, it can match the rails on my sanmarco. if u are stressed about the hub, can throw some extra coinage if need be.
-

right then. so word on the street is that it's fine, it just needs to be worn in a bit (with care re brake alignment). will it look scruffy when worn down though?
i ask because I definately don't won't be using brakes on the rear so will want as much colour on that rim as possible but will be using brakes on the front. I'm on a moderate budget so wont be able to afford getting custom built wheels (with a machined surface on front and not on rear) and wheel sets i've seen knocking about on (U.S.) ebay are either both machined or not at all. I know that that BLB sell wheel sets with velocty rims for around £200 but i haven;t had a chance to go back recently to ask about them - does anyone know if they do a 'mix and match' with braking surfaces.

You should try Cavendish Cycles on New Cavendish St, I've heard they do Velocity's at a cheaper price.....
-
• #22
Import a pair of Velocitys then get them built to spec here.
ben's cycle in Milwaukie are pretty efficient. It's even worth checking there built wheel prices, but the complete wheels put up the shipping and extortion charges.

The velocity rimmed wheels i;ve seen on ebay work out at about £150 (by it now price + shipping). sold by a trader called wheelandsprocket. don;t know how good the hubs are though. here's an example http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VELOCITY-DEEP-V-TRACK-WHEELSET-WHEELS-700C-YELLOW-NMSW_W0QQitemZ170157111574QQihZ007QQcategoryZ58099QQcmdZViewItem.
i've actually bought a pair of machined weinmann rimmed wheels for another bike off this trader and that worked out at £105. and it arrived within 3 days!

Works perfectly and gives an amazing squeak as they wear in. Almost miss it now.

Working backwards. Ignore this too. And slap me next time you see me for my interweb breaking ability.
what's the diddle on using a brake on a rim that doesn't have a machined braking surface? I assume it's not recommended but have seen pictures of bikes on the tinterweb where brakes are installed on bikes with deep v coloured rims. also is it possible to get a machined brake surface 'etched'/put on a rim or do they come manufactured like that?
