Speaking of Mandy Jones, back in the 80s I had a workmate who was a third cat road racer. He was out riding around Rochdale one evening when he came up behind a woman riding with a kid in a child seat behind her saddle.
He went to overtake, Mandy (for it was she) heard him coming, upped the pace and dropped him after a few miles...
She and her husband run Surosa Cycles in Oldham now. -

Thank you for the link.
In 1967 she pedalled 277.25 miles in 12 hours, famously overtaking Mike McNamara, her male rival, and giving him a liquorice allsort as she passed
This makes me smile so much.

Always makes me laugh when she is described as a 'female' cyclist.
I could be wrong but I don't think any Yorkshire family has ever named a son 'Beryl'. -

That's what they want you to think.

When the Grand Départ sets off from Leeds town hall next month, all 180 riders in the peloton will be men. Under rules set by the UCI, cycling's governing body, the race is deemed too hard for women. Women are only allowed to ride 80 miles a day in UCI events, way shorter than almost every stage in the three-week men's tour.
I genuinely didn't realise they were not allowed to compete, I had always assumed it was the usual case of the male versions of the sport getting more coverage, and the female races were just run separately.
I understand the need to split men and women in some sports, but to declare it too hard is a piss take. 6th place on the Trans AM is currently held by a woman. And 6th is an achievement for a man or a woman.

I saw the Beryl play last night; it really was excellent.
It mentioned that she set the 12 hour time trial record at 277.25 miles in 1967, and this record still holds today, for women. Which is slightly surprising considering improved engineering and nutrition etc over the last 50 years. I was curious as to whether there's been any attempts made on this record, but googling doesn't bring up anything. Anyone know?

It was further than the men's record at the time.
Every year there's about 5-6 12hr races with women racing that could be considered 'attempts on her record'.

Yards? No it was ~8 miles by Jill Wilkinson in last year's Newbury 12hr
