Lighting up

  • Tonight was the first commute of the season when I might have used lights and it got me to thinking. Now that I have 3 bikes and really use any of them based on a whim, I was thinking of moving to 100% wearable lighting. Basically to save me having 3 sets of fittings \ lights.

    Would this be legal?

Given that we're also supposed to have reflectors all over the shop (first thing I ripped off when I got the bike home...), do you think it'll attract mr plods attention?

  • no.

pedal reflectors are not compulsory on bikes made before 1985.

if you have decent lights then you won't get pulled over

  • S'what I thought, technically illegal, dodgy in an accident (contributory negligence?) but if I'm lit up like a christmas tree unlikely to get me in schtick

Red rear reflector and red light on the back, white light on the front, and yellew reflectors on the rearward facing edges of the pedals.

You can light yourself up all you like.

  • The Highway Code At night your cycle MUST have white front and red rear lights lit. It MUST also be fitted with a red rear reflector (and amber pedal reflectors, if manufactured after 1/10/85)

just a red rear reflector, really.

as if it makes any difference.

  • Exactly. If you've got a decent set lights, reflectors are pointless.

  • if you want to argue the law factor in an accident, how can anyone prove you didn't have a red rear reflector after they've driven two tons of metal over you and your bike?

and to be honest, the amount of reflective material on shoes, bags and clobber will more than satisfy the plod/insurers/court

you look at the london fg/ss bridges ride pictures, I bet many people don't even realise they show up like that

  • I agree.

I never realised that my gloves and helmet lit up the way they do.

  • it's a pisser when crime fighting late at night..

I wear all this black get-up thinking I can sneak up on wrongdoers and wreak my terrible justice, when in actual fact there's so much reflective material that I get lit up like that "Tron Guy"

  • i just bought a pair of those small back-up LED lights, shit they aer bright, for my second bike.

  • Hey i thought that as long as your rear light was flashing, you didnt need a front one? I swear it said that on the packaging my rear cateye came with. I want some of those strap on LEDs that Yang and Htay have!

  • Hey i thought that as long as your rear light was flashing, you didnt need a front one?

Not at all - in fact flashing lights have only recently been accepted as road legal (and even then only if they're BS-approved, which most aren't).

I've got a set of those little Backupz lights - I think they were £4 the pair from the CTC Rally. I stuff them in one of the pockets of my bag, so I've pretty much always got them with me. They're not that bright, but they're good enough if you've forgotten your main lights or get stuck in the pub longer than you expected.

  • Right now I've just got a rear flashing light, that a girl nicked from me at a party last night, but I definitely want to get a front light because I don't feel that confident about drivers seeing me when I approach roundabouts etc. I find myself slowing down a lot and sometimes even giving way. So long as you can be seen from the front and the back then you're cool I think. I really don't like the idea of cluttering up my handlebars though. I got used to my brake lever only because it saved my life on the first day of installing it.

Australian Miner's Collection - Fine Tawny Port? You'll need lights (somewhere to sleep) if you're planning of drinking much of that.
