are there different armadillo tyres? i.e cheap hardwearing ungrippy ones and more expensive grippy softer racey ones?

Used as pair of these for a while. They're beautiful to ride but could do wiuth being ridden in conjunction with a front brake as I skidded through in less than two months.
I like the cheaper strandard armadillo's too but the red side walls are nasty.

There's also different versions under Elite and the normal one, like Roubaix..That site also says the sythe-cut-looking tread pattern is new for 2007..
specialized seem to have changed the tread pattern on the armadillo's, the new ones look like this
and seem to wear down quicker than the older ones like this
anyone else notice this?????
