Alex, tell us about your moustache bars

  • Just been reading this review on 63xc.com about Midge Dirt Drops:

And as you know, I'm looking to build the universal bike: A mix of cyclocross, track and tourer, for off-road and on-road cycling, commuting and distance. With couplers for travelling.

And part of this is considering what bars. Nitto track bars are all fine and dandy, when you don't need to go off road or down technical paths. And I've thought about standard road bars, but I don't think they'll offer the universality that perhaps some wider drops might.

And then I found the Midge Dirt Drops.

What bars are you running? The moustache. And how do you find it over all of the types of riding that you do? Any complaints? Ever get numb hands or tired hands? Ever feel like your wrists are at the wrong angle? Ever feel they're not appropriate (traffic) or too wide?

Basically, be honest and tell us the pros and cons as you've experienced it of riding a moustache.

  • I too have a moustache (on-one mungo). Personally I love them. I've not done any really long distance with them, furthest is about 40 miles, but stayed comfortable throughout. I've seen different brake positioning done, either on the end (upright style) or on the curves for a more aggressive position.

    Pros:

    • it's fun
    • you have a lot of different hand positions to play with
    • if you want you can have a very relaxed position

    Cons:

    • you can't get really low down like you can with drops
    • it's a leeetle bit wide for london traffic

I've not tried the midge bars, they're like a bit-more-dropped equivalent of mine, I have seen some though and been quite tempted. I've heard good things about them.

  • Moustache Bars

is that like the ones in Old Compton Street?

  • I ran my moustache inverted. I did not like them very much because they are very wide and not very comfortable. Having said that, it is possible that the lack of confort had more to do with my stem reach than the bars themselves because the most comfortable position was a bit stretched for me.

Why don’t you try them for a while before you decide if you like them. I still have mine after swapping for track bars (I wanted something narrower).
