  • Just wondering if you find the sole stiff enough when used with small platform mtb cleats (eg. ATAC). My Sidi road shoes are the most comfortable uppers ever, but when I first used them (with a Time road cleat), I felt like there were pressure points between the cleat edges and the sole. This sensation has pretty much vanished with time (no pun intended).

I'm thinking about exclusively using mtb shoes and ATACS (possible pair of Silver Sidi Genius Size 44 on eBay sometime soon!), but want some input on how the setup stands up to sprinting/climbing forces.

    Over to yous...

  • had my sidi's for 10 years,(pre-carbon for sure) had shimano mtb cleats on them all the time, haven't noticed any give in the sole.

  • I ride Sidi Dominators with ATACs and they're fine. Done 1,000 mile+ bike tours on 'em, alleycats and track tracing. Don't really have an issue with them.

Don't notice pressure points etc but then haven't ridden wider platforms in years so maybe I'm just used to it.

  • They're fine.

    It's what I use.

  • Sounds promising. I've got a 10-year-old pair of Lake mtb shoes (with ATAC cleats) that have a stiff sole (Shimano competition sole or something), but the uppers were never super-comfy, and the laces/velcro combo causes too much kerfuffle.. and they're on the way out.

Looks like I've got to spend the cost of a new bike on new prescription riding glasses and shoes, but you can never be too kind to your eyes and feet, init :)

  • It's more likely to be the shape of your foot than the shoe that would cause the problem,
I'm guessing once the insole molded to your foot shape thats when the discomfort would have gone,
(genius is not a mtb shoe by the way)
The new carbon dragons look very nice

I know, that's what I'd be selling on ebay to help recoup the cost of some Dominators or whatever ;)

Not sure there's much moulding possible with Sidi insoles. At the time, I thought it might be to do with either the cleat corners (definitely where the hotspots were), or possibly the cleat bolt retaining whatsits. "It-th a mythtery, oh it-th a mythtery..."

  • I have a pair of MTB SIDI dominators clipping onto a very small platform pair of Bebop deluxe pedals - zero problems - very stiff - no pressure points - super comfortable. (but the bebops do have a nice wide cleat)

hey leeww, that Bebop is a sweet looking pedal and a new one on me. have always been happy with the various Sidi MTB shoes I have had used with SPD. did go down the eggbeater route for a bit but found the cleat wore too quickly. might check out those bebops for a change

don't you get on with contact lenses and normal cycling glasses over the top?

I find it's the only way (all the time my prescription is low enough, could be a problem soon though)

cycling glasses need to cover a lot of the face, and the peripheral vision goes to shit if you have prescription lenses.
or with flatter lenses you get a large area around the lens that you need to see properly out of (like looking over your shoulder) but can't.

    anyone else short sighted?

    please Opine.

  • i'm as blind as a bat, some days wear me lenses with riding glasses, better in the rain, you can take them off and still feckin' see,
sometimes wear my perscriptions, lenses are not as wide as proper riding gogs, and the periferal vision is not as good, have to move the head more.

  • is that why u crashed into that limo.

  • feck off......8^P

  • Yeah, short sighted..
Can only see as far as the pint in front of him :P

  • but he can see you at the other end of the table when the glass need re-filling! ;)

  • your damn right there jon

Yep, they are great, lighter than even a triple Ti set of eggbeaters, a class leader at 185g a pair (shimano's top end PD-M959 are 354g a pair) - all steel construction, so no weight limits either.

They are in fact very old, been around for many many years, I have had a pair for at least 10 years.

  • I sometimes use contacts with normal sunglasses/shields (training, racing, raining), but for normal commuting I've got an old pair of Rudy Projects with clip-ins. The prescriptions out of date, and the frames are knackered. For general life/commuting, I don't really want to use contacts, cos when I get off and go to a placement/lecture and have to read something, my minimum focal distance is rubbish. I'm in the habit of peering under my glasses when dealing with small text. And I don't want to use my normal specs, as they're unlikely to survive any unfortunate impacts...

I'm looking into some Optilabs (hopefully with minimal optical distortion round the edges, and might be able to knock down the price with some whingeing about my student status and working tax credit/NHS exemption certificate :)

  • I had some optilabs years ago, in fact I was one of his first customers..

they're ok. but look like shit and don't really wraparound that much

    but they are what? £90?

Oakley Half jacket XLJ with prescription clear lens £275

    ouch, extra lenses from £140.

    think I'll keep with contacts.

  • I'm gonna go down there and have a look at the current crop of frames. They've gone up to £140 now (same price for photochromic as anything else which suits me).

Then again, I might just keep going with the Nerdy Projects until I can't see shit or they snap.

Don't you find yourself having difficulty trying to read tiny text when you're wearing contacts? By the time it's in focus, I'm holding it at arm's length and am back to square one.

  • no, seems fine.

although I tend to wear glasses if I'm doing a lot of work on a computer.

my astigmatism means that I don't get quite as good correction from contacts as I do from glasses, but it's not something I notice

  • I really rate the half-jackets..

you can swap out the lenses for ordinary ones when wearing contacts..

    hmm.

    lenses for £170
get a pair of ordinary ones with frame for £60

    £230...

£90 more than optilabs, but you've got spare normal lenses, and the option to add as many in the future..

    fuck, I'm nearly tempted myself!

eye test first. must be up to date

  • Astigmatism here too, but again not enough of a problem to care when I'm all contacted up.

Having just paid out what was left of my summer-teaching earnings on a new pair of Sidis and a set of pedals, fancy-schmancy glasses will have to wait. I've just dug out an old pair of 'reactions' civvies (one prescription out-of-date), and despite being a fairly shallow lense, they seem fine for peering through in the commuter-position, and are pretty wide. And suddenly suit me again now that I'm sporting a No.1 cut.

Why have Oakley when you can Specsavers? It's a myopic fashion no-brainer :p

  • heh! your optician would say that the eyes come first!

    the shoe salesman would differ...

the barman would be sympathetic, but probably just pour another glass..

    as for the prostitute..

  • Awww go on.. finish the story ;)
