Small frame for a foreign girl

  • i've recently arrived to london and am looking to buy a bike. i've gone around to a few recommended shops (bricklane bikes, brixton cycle, etc) but no one really has anything in my size. i'm a small girl - about 5'2" / 160cm. for example, i rode a 49cm lemond filmore and it was slightly too big for me (not comfortable to lean into the horns to reach the brakes).

basically what i'd like is a light-weight single speed (possibly with a flip-flop hub so i can try out fixed, though i haven't yet...), that i can use for riding on the road (so room for a mudflap would be handy). i've looked at a few other off-the-shelf bikes (heard nice things about the surly crosscheck, wasn't really thrilled by the specialized langster) but no one around has one i can ride. i've been leaning towards trying to build one up myself, but i'm a bit new to that. and also i haven't got an infinite budget. i'm happy to go with second-hand parts if it allows me to get something decent for 300-400. anyone have any tips on where to start looking for a frame that might fit me?

  • ask roberto or joss on here, they may have something to suit?

  • plus, keep an eye on ebay. A small size like that might not attract too many buyers.. well, unless it's a Jap keirin frame!

  • fuji track bikes go down to a 43 (with 650) wheels. also, the geometry on some makes may be slightly different from the lemond, so perhaps it's worth going into a shop to get fitted and take down the measurements that would be ideal for your height.

  • andy or odge from fixedgearlondon.com might have something for you.

last time at trampsparadise party someone had a tiny dolan track frame for sale, don't know if it's gone yet...

Gumtree can sometime throw up a decent frame or two.

    Good luck

  • Sorry, Dolan frame is taken.

    BTW, what's with the username?

  • trampsparadise BTW, what's with the username?

i knew you would ask that question....

  • I'm sure anybody that knows me knew I would ask.

  • yep!

  • trampsparadise Sorry, Dolan frame is taken.

    BTW, what's with the username?

You might want to clarify why you're asking. She's just registered and will not know why you ask. To her, she's probably now asking herself "What's the deal with this dude?".

I have no problem what people call themselves on here, obviously though some people will have more attachment to some usernames and be more precious about names that include certain phrases.

  • Sorry, where's my manners?

Deadroxy: Sorry, I'm just an anal internetphobe and have a problem with 'usernames'. See mine is really a nickname in real-life which a member of this forum gave me a few years ago (even gave me a leather collar with the name embossed on it! (such a nice guy). I used to go by my real name on online forums but he convinced me otherwise. See, some people also say I'm easily led and very naive, sometimes I agree with them!

I just like to know the meaning behind usernames and I ask every new person this question in some form or another... Welcome to London.

BTW, the tiny Dolan frame really is taken.

  • don't fuji do a kids size for the basic track bike???

  • dogsballs don't fuji do a kids size for the basic track bike???

De Ver Cycles has a listing for one in the fourth post...

  • me bad, too early :(

  • haha - no, my user name is not a big secret. "roxy" is my nickname in real life (though it has nothing to do with my actual name) and deadroxy through a complicated series of events became one of my online handles when plain old roxy was taken :]

the peugeot frame looks quite nice but i'm still not sure about the sizing. the recommendation of getting fitted is a good one - but for a second hand frame isn't that still a bit tricky - when the geometries differ quite a bit? i'd really like to see it in person or ride something built up. MrSmith & edmundane i'll get in touch with the people you recommended to see if they might have something decent. but if anyone has any other recommended people / places or happens to have a bike / frame - please let me know because i'm still having trouble finding one :]

    Hi Deadroxy,

I'm roxy, trampsparadise is a little protective of me! If you'd been in London the past couple months you'd understand why there could be cause for concern for someone popping up on the forum with a name like yours.
It's a loaded name, but no offense was meant by the question; purely curiousity.
    Welcome to London!
I look forward to meeting the girl with the bold statement for a name upon my return ;-)

    yours truly,
    Roxy (very much alive)

  • Edwardes in Camberwell had a couple of munchkin-specific frames lately.

    Pinarello @£299 and Fuji @ £99.

Not people I'd recommend, but worth a call. Just don't expect "service".

  • hi alive-roxy: don't worry i'm not a zombie - i'm also very much living :]

kowalski - thanks for the tip i'll check it out. i'm nearby-ish (in brixton) so it's not too far for me.

just one general question - is anyone else riding a peugeot tourmalet? i've never tried one but i've been enticed by the one hovis mentioned that's up on ebay. it's super cheap - but then i dunno if i'm getting enough for my money.

  • looks nice, but it being in carbolite tubing will mean it will be very very heavy ie twice as heavy as a 531 frame.

  • small frame for a foreign girl

Sounds like a good swap to me,

now where did i leave that raleigh budgie...

  • A seatpost for the Peugeot will be a bassa to find.

  • yeah, leave the peugeot.

    unless it's REALLY cheap.

carbolite tubing isn't light, but then it's not quite as bad as the old reynolds 501.

those build up into reasonable bikes, if they are straight.

seatpost is a serious problem if it is one of the small diameter ones. it would make or break the deal.

  • hmm... sounds a bit too complicated then for me. i want something i can ride -soon- without an insane amount of work. i'm still new to building things up so i don't want to start a project that will put me in over my head. maybe i'll go and have a look at somethings already built up as mentioned. any other strong recommendations for frames i should keep an eye out for on ebay/gumtree?

  • RPM yeah, leave the peugeot.

    unless it's REALLY cheap.

carbolite tubing isn't light, but then it's not quite as bad as the old reynolds 501.

are you sure? i thought carbolite and HLE are peugeot's own plain gauge tubing for bottom tier bikes they make?
