Sprocket remover/spokey

Posted on
  • 3 of my back spokes broke today, i went to get replacement for them, but i still havent got the sprocket remover to fit the spokes in (2 left and 1 right)... what shall i do? try to fit the two left ones and ride home and wait? or bring it to a shop?

anyone with a rear sprocket remover around the city i can borrow?

  • you can ride with one spoke missing if you fix the other two, at least for a little while. if you really want to get the sprocket off, turn the bike upside down, take the chain off the chainring, leaving it loose around the bottom bracket shell, then loop it around the sprocket, you can get it off fairly easily this way...

  • i have tried taht method before but have been unskilled enough to get it out :( dammit, maybe i need someone just to hold my hand while doing it LOL!

  • my chain is too short to use that method could be the case with yours aswell

  • Too short? You are taking it off the chainring, yeah?

Fixaxion - have you seen this guide? Worked alright for me, after I looked closely at the pics.

  • poo i just installed the wheel! will try it when i get the chain tugs i ordered :D

  • sooo.. Just trying the rotafix thing for the first time to remove a sprocket.. But it's taking a lot of effort to remove the sprocket, even with the rotafix method. It still hasn't come off, I'm a bit scared that the chain will snap or that I'll fuck up the wheel, I am applying a lot of muscle to it.. Should I go the extra bit or is something wrong? Should it really be this hard to remove?

  • are you sure you're doing it in the right direction? sprockets are right hand threaded as with most things (turn clockwise to tighten). the diagrams on the site are for tightening. if you need to remove it you need to do it the other way round.

  • Yeah, as edmundane said, check you're turning the wheel the right way.

I doubt the chain would snap. They're designed to take enormous loads that are way bigger than anything they experience during normal riding.

  • The "rotafix" definitely works, I had a stuck sprocket once and it came off easily. In principle it's the same as the old "put cog in vice and turn wheel" method.

  • yup, I reversed all the directions, I'm 99% sure it's turning in the right direction.. I'll just muscle it :D Didn't someone say in another thread that fuji used loctite on their sprockets? hmmm..

  • loctite?! Do you mean threadlock or actual super glue?

  • threadlock.. It did work after I posted that, I just stepped on the bars and turned the wheel with both hands a lot of "aaaaarghhh". It did a loud band and then started to unscrew fairly smooth, which leads me to believe that they had indeed used thread lock :)

  • i managed to get the rear sprocket as well with taht method, but the problem i'm having now is on the other wheel, where the lock ring doesnt want to come off... i've got the dura-ace rear sprocket remover but it doesnt fit :(

this one looks like this (only 2 'holes')

    i

can someone tell me what tool i need to remove this b1tch?!

  • chisel/screw driver and a hammer :)

  • i did try that, hit that thing like a motha but still wouldnt come off :( look at the dent i did on the last pic ROFL!

  • ahhh that's a ding, not a dent! :P Sorry, don't mean to offend you, but make sure you're hitting the right direction! It's pretty easy to get confused..

  • Looking at the angle, FixAxioN is hitting it the right way (clockwise to undo it).

Unless any magic image flippery is about...

Looks like you might need a good ol' traditional lockring tool. Try and get one where you can stick a bit of pipe on the end to really rack up the torque.

  • Gym time + steroids = no lockring problems (& shruken balls)

  • If I can't remove any part of my bike I just show it a picture of Chuck Norris.
    Works every time!

  • lol that is not helping! :P
