  • Ok, so I wanted to start the 1000th discussion.
Anyways gotta say I love it. Had a moment the other day caning it past loads of roadies and commuters up a really steep hill on the way home, coming to a perfect trackstand at the top, waiting for at least 20 secs, then shooting off.
So, what's everyone else's good bits?

  • The look of disbelief on practically every person in Newcastle when they find i ride a fixed wheel bike. People just don't seem to get it up here!

On the plus side it's got me pretty spectacular discounts in bike stores though

  • they dont really get much up there do they.....

  • Hey watch it. i'm a geordie born and bred. But no.. i've never been told i'm a lunatic so often in my life. Its like they think that fixed riding leads to instant gory death.

  • one of my best fixed moment was speeding brakeless in soho behind aidan, he brakes, i skid and think " oh fuck i'm gonna hit him and chuck him under that cunting white van!!!!holy crap i don't wanna go to jail....pleeeeease" then he moves about 2inches to the right, i brush my face on ihs empty backpack and stop , look at him and say "Jeeeesus man!!!!"
    he sez "what?" lol

a perfect demonstration of why brakes are not allowed on the track, brought to you by stef and aidan on the road behind a white van...

  • a perfect demonstration why brakes should be used on the road..

    1. Crashing on a wet oily bend on the way to the Eastern Counties Hill Climb, refusing medical attention because "I've been training for months for an event that starts in 20 minutes", then being the complete unheard-of who lost by 0.5 seconds to Zak Carr, the best British all-rounder (RIP).

    2. Finishing the South Downs Way in one day, me on a fixed Inbred, my mate on a SS one.

    3. The first time I rode the über-steep banking at full pelt at the Calshot velodrome, holding the black line at about 40mph, feeling like my left ear might scrape along the Côte d'Azur.

    4. Flying up Cheddar Gorge on a 72" and then seeing Chew Valley Lake sparkling like a sapphire in the sun over the other side of the Mendips.

    5. Riding to Southend and back on an 81", and feeling so fresh at the 110 mile point that I decided to throw in some hill interval training in Epping Forest.

    6. The first time I rode up Muswell Hill in under 90 seconds.

I think there's an underlying theme here...

  • that you take pleasure in masochism?

  • I was thinking about going up hills mostly. Isn't "taking pleasure in masochism" tautological? Whatever.

I've thought of 2 more recent 'moments':

    1. The first time I took my son out in his childseat.

    2. This morning's sedate ride to/round Victoria Park with my son in his childseat and my wife on her new second-hand SS Lemond Fillmore. Look at us, the shifterless nuclear family ;p

  • BringMeMyFix Isn't "taking pleasure in masochism" tautological?

    now you mention it, yes.

my head isn't working this morning

  • BringMeMyFix 4. Flying up Cheddar Gorge on a 72" and then seeing Chew Valley Lake sparkling like a sapphire in the sun over the other side of the Mendips.

I've been to that valley many times...beautiful aye?

  • Beautiful and cheesey.

  • i dont know if this counts but i got a call at midnight from a czech guy i knew a few years ago asking me if i wanted anything for my birthday and he had heard(from my mother) that i like fixed gear bikes!

a nice black leather yanco frame pad would be nice please:)

my only favourite fixed moment is at one point during my commute i have to cycle on a pavement alongside a dual carriageway. no pedestrians im in the countryside! in the morning there is always slow traffic on it and as im cruising past all the slow cars the drivers tend to look a bit pissed off.
nothing special but you dont get much special riding out here, apart from country lanes and big.

  • dunwich dynamo this year: wet, cold, hungry, tired...and then seeing the horizon turn slightly orange hearing nothing but my tires against the ground. everything seemed perfect.

  • Being constantly asked "How do you get up hills?" to which the only answer is of course "Muscle."

L2SOS, my first fixed long distance ride.

Seeing other fixies in the street, giving each other that knowing nod.

I'm the only fixie rider in my town as far as I know. I've never seen anyone even riding a singlespeed!

I'm going out for a ride. Pehaps I'll come back with a favourite moment.

  • rolling along, smooth road, doesn't feel like your putting any effort in but your going at a decent speed, almost like the bike is doing the work for you. sun shining but not to warm.

  • aahhh smooth roads.. they're just great.. hm hold on a minute?

pfff I need to get out of london.

  • Riding yesterday eve through Sheen with a friend, they have huge cycle lanes that have just been resurfaced! the sun setting down wit that orange color, breeze on our faces, nothing could take that smile away from us!! :)

  • eeehhhh
