the flat round one

how do you mean, like a gear cable nipple but brake specific? can you find any photos of it? sorry, can't picture it :{

most brake inner cables have both ends on, one is like a nipple (aiden no comments please) the other is like a flat disc cake shape i suppose 7/8mm x 3/4mm. that is probably the one you want.

Pear end seats perfectly in here
Which works best coz it's the moving part, so the outer doesn't move around when you brake.

Nah, tried it both ways works best the 'wrong way round'. Cable end fits snug, and the cable doesn't move when you brake.

works for me! they're not designed to be a single brake lever, they're 'in-line' type levers, so it's a bodge anyway.

cheers for your comments guys. Tris, yeah, the pear end does fit fine this end, but this way you would have the brake outer getting in the way of yr fingers/bar no? I'd prefer it the other way, so the outer is going towards the centre of the bar.
When you put the inner in the other way, the way i'd prefer, it seems to be the "shaft" of the nipple that seems slightly too wider dia. to slide in ok.
[beavis_and_butthead_laugh] hehe, nipple, hehe, shaft hehehe, slide HEHEHEHE [/beavis_and_butthead_laugh] :))
maybe other cables would fit, i'l have to take a lever to a couple of shops and try

Not mine, but I've got the same type setup
see, the cable doesn't get in the way.
I think there's only pear and barrel ends, I've seen smaller barrels but they still won't fit it. You may need to drill it or bodge an adjuster like in the pic.

I've got my lever lower
but it doesn't get close enough to the stem to be a problem

I have the exact same lever, with the tit sitting in the inner part (the opposite side to your diagram) it works well.
I've bought a pair of specialized "top mount road-brake levers" but will just use one hooked up to the front brake. Queston is, because they seem to be pass through levers (to be used along with standard road style levers) i need to find out which inner cable I need.
The standard road "pear" shaped nipple doesn't sit right. I wont use a gear cable as they're much thinner, and I dont want to be gambling if i'll only have one proper brake.
So the question is, what other option is there?
