  • I'm intrigued. What gear inches do people ride?

    I ride...71.4

I wonder what the most common is...

  • 78.8 and 97.0 on the fast bike.
    75.6 on the brakeless.

  • 90 on my Harry Hall

  • 48:18 - 72.0
    48:20 - 64.8

    on a flip-flop, fixed/fixed SystemEx. Lot's of skid/spin/skid!!

  • 50:17 - 77.3 bit hard on the cold knees skiding.

  • 63ish" on my SS. 69" when fixed.

    Spinny spin spin spin.

  • yup 46:17 = 69"

  • at the moment i ride 46x16 which is about 77.

the perfect gear for me would be 46x17 tho

    i can tell..

  • photoben yup 46:17 = 69"

    46:17 = 71.something", unless you're running special sub-15mm tyres or sumfink...?

    Me:
    hack/beater/shitter = 65"
    general road = 72"/81" (seasonal)
    off-road = 57"/61"
    steep hillclimbs = 55"

  • lpg at the moment i ride 46x16 which is about 77.

Had enough of spinning then (or 'twiddling' as it was once known)?

  • Oh cheers mate.

  • photoben Oh cheers mate.

I'm not doubting that it only felt like a 69" to your pins of steel ;-)

  • yeah. something about grinding up hills really appeals to me. i find it a lot easier even up steep hills. maybe its cos i can get out of the saddle for more than 30secs without my legs dying?

still tho if its a race...i would go faster with a 17t......hm maybe thats why you flew past me at regents park eehhhh? :)

  • I don't remember seeing eeehhhh flying past you at Regents Park ;-)

  • i felt like a right fscking tit on my 46x16 if only i knew....

  • Yeah, when was I in Regent's Park? :)

  • haaaaa im 52x16!! i think thats about an 85!

  • blimey aidan, you must mash the pedals everywhere!

  • its great! where i havent riden a smaller gear i have nothing to compare it to....so it kind of feels normal.it is quite difficult when it comes to hills but there aint to many of them in london so thats not a problem......it flies!!

  • old mans knees 48:17 (74inches)

  • 48:16 as well (78.8")

Feels really good accelerating and just riding around in general, but I want to try something a bit lighter just to see how it compares.. I'm kinda used to heavy gears on the bmx I guess, or rather "violent" starts if that makes any sense haha..

Maybe I really don't need to go that fast and my knees would thank me?

  • 75.6 Soma (42x15)
    69.9 Raleigh (44x17)
    55.5 SS (32x15)
    119.2 Ribble (53x12)

    1. I can skid if I really want to but I don't really see the point. Stopping tends to work better.
  • the-smiling-buddha old mans knees 48:17 (74inches)

    snap

  • h2o 74. I can skid if I really want to but I don't really see the point. Stopping tends to work better.

    haaa:)
