  • I know for a fact that Miche are re-designing their whole Primato Pista range.... so soon, the old style will be much cheaper still.

  • There was an unused Dura Ace track crankset at Herne Hill on Sunday, the guy only wanted £80 for them... He's always at the jumbles, late-50s, long grey hair, sells some NJS stuff...He's had them for a while... Any good? Someone here's bound to know who he is/where he is...
Not the same thing, I know, but cheap, cheap, cheap...

Yeah, that's the fella... Lotsa cool stuff, next one's in September sometime tho'... I need to buy some hubs off him pronto... He had a set of brand new Miche Primatos for under £50, and some Suzues for £30... He mad...

Saw him at a jumble down south last year and nearly bought them myself: unused, boxed, crisply shiny, 165s, £90ish, what stopped me? In fact they are road cranks; they've had the inner ring support very neatly machined off each of the five spider arms.

From memory the holes had not been recessed, though, like the DA track cranks are, so the female parts of the chainring bolts all sit slightly proud at the back of each arm reducing clearance to the chainstay. If you do this mod yourself don't buy the DA chainring bolts as they're too short unless you can machine a recess into the holes.

The other issue is the chainring BCD (Bolt Circle Diameter). Pukka DA track BCD is 144mm as is current Campag Pista (old is 151), old Miche (new is 135 as is Campag Strada/Road), Sugino etc. However, DA road BCD is 130 which is what this guy is selling. This does have the advantage of a wider range of chainrings being available although they're not true Track/Pista.

Measuring BCDs at a jumble is a bit of pain but is made easier by measuring the distance between two adjacent holes (centre-to-centre or edge-to-edge); 151 is 89mm (88.8), 144 is 85 (84.6), 135 is 79 (79.4), 130 is 76 (76.4) and 110 is 65 (64.7). Easier still is to mark them on a piece of paper or maybe there's a market for a plastic ruler marked with BCDs and spoke spacing that . . .
(Unfortunately all this cerebral activity has proved too much for TechnicalDad and he has gone off for a glass of Leffe)
