Replacement bike semi-update

Posted on
  • Ok as a lot of you know my bike met its rather untimely end a few days ago and SJS Cycles agreed to replace the bike. Well today I received a phone call from them, basically what they were planning to do was to use a fairly inexpensive track frame they used to sell for the frame, and replace all the bits that couldn't be salvaged from the old bike. But they have been unable to find any of these frames, this means they are having to use a custom made track frame that they have recently made. I have been told that their custom frames normally retail at £1000 and because of this they are asking that I pay £150 towards the cost of the bike (effectively covering the cost of the materials I guess?)
The problem that I am faced with is without paying this £150 I have no bike, but it does effectively double the price of what I wanted to spend on my bike.

What I was hoping to find out was is this how much do custom frame's normally retail for?
and finally as a bit of a novice, how can I tell that it really is the great frame that it should be?

    Thank

  • for £150 you can't really say no, if you don't like it, you could always sell it on...to me for £155 8^)

  • go for it mate, sounds like a good deal.

  • Yep beg borrow steal 150 quid. That 150 is about right for the cost of the tubes consuables getting a paint job. BIte their hands off and give them the money you are one lucky bugger. SJS are more famed for there rock solid touring / expidition bikes but this will still be a good bike and base for you to upgrade with better components, just get a good lock or two.

  • £156

  • say you aint gonig to pay anything towards it as it was thier fault that if broke in the first place.

  • 150 notes?

    Get in!

  • I think 150 quid is pretty reasonable for a brand new frame esp as they're going to do all the work moving components, assembly and tuning.

All my experiences of dealing with St Johns has left me with the impression that they're honest hard-working folks who are not in the habit of ripping people off.

Custom frames are not cheap - you're easily looking at 500 quid (for something quite basic) and up. A lot depends on the tubing, lugs (if any), welding, finish etc. For example Dave Yates prices start around 630 quid for a track frame+forks - http://www.daveyatescycles.co.uk/

Hopefully they'll ensure that the frame is a good fit for you and that you're happy with it. They should also be able to tell you a little about the tubing etc of the frame which should give some idea of how good a deal it is.

It sucks that your bike was destroyed but it does sound like St Johns are really working damn hard to help you out. A lot of places would have just blown you off that it must have be user-error or some other nonsense.

  • Is it a steel frame? The one that broke was
