Rear wheel

  • So, it's time for me to get a new rear wheel. I tire of my single speed adapted cassette hub. It just doesn't look cool enough! So my question is, where is the best place to get a flip-flop rear wheel? I had a look in Brick lane bikes who have some...and my friend got one from from Condor. What should I get and where should I get it from?

  • A lot depends on your budget and any special requirements. Theres way too many options out there without any more specifics (such as width of frame, high-flange/low-flange/colour, chainline, braking surface on rim etc.)

Definitely buy from somewhere like Brixton or Brick Lane and if your budget stretches to it, get them to handbuild it for you.

Lots of reasonably priced sealed hubs out there for you to chose from. Again speak to the good people in the bike shops.

Probably want to invest a little in the hub and in the rim (ie Mavic, Velocity, Ambrosio, DT etc)

  • harry rowland is the answer to your problem, call him.

  • Thanks!

Sorry for being dumb, but what is high-low flange? I though I'd figured out most wheel stuff. But clearly not!

  • it's the size of the disc bits on either side of the hub. high flange means a larger diameter, low flange means a smaller diameter.

    high flange

    low flange

  • high-low flange :)

  • i laced my wheel today!if it wasn't for andy i'll still be trying to figure out where to start from...i made quite a few mistakes, and consumed andy's patience but made it, thing is that the black nipples i got from condor are shitew and the black is coming off already, even before truing...'kinell, so it means that once i'll get hold of some decent black nipples my front hub and the rest of thew spokes it'll be lacetime again then my ride shall be done!
Three cross by the way, looks cool!

  • I don't know if it's already been mention, but... ss far as I'm aware you can only get aluminum black nipples, which are really soft and will eventually weld themselves to the rim if your rim is aluminum, or has aluminum eyelets.

Brass nipples don't round off. Well, the ones that came with my DT swiss spokes haven't and they're fine. You just can't get them in black. I don't think they look noticeable with an all black wheel to be honest. I like them on mine.

well done, Stef. mistakes are good -- the more you build, the fewer you'll make. building your own wheel is one of the most gratifying things about cycling, i think.

You can get them in black. Bear with me and I'll dig out the link..

Built by and Aussie for an Englishman. He's on the forum too, I think.. err.. socialamnesia??
Actually, he might not be Aussie nor the recipient an Englishman.. nevermind.

  • Oh right I might have to contact him for my next wheel build... I assumed it was a typo.

  • I'm currently building some track wheels with DT swiss black brass nipples with pro-lock (fanciest nipples I've ever used). They were a little pricey (about 16 quid for 100 or somethingl) but the black is so far holding to truing. Should have the wheels finished tomorrow.
