• im looking for a pair of wheels, i dont need a flip flop hub. iv seen the three sets on kiwi cycles, has anyone used any of these? are they any good? got any other recomendations?

  • Brick Lane Bikes do a set of Mavic rims with SystemEx hubs for around £155 - built by Harry Rowland

  • singlespeed or fixed?

  • i was thinking of getting these from that kiwi guy "Formula hubs, Mavic rims, black or stainless spokes"

maybe i had a bad batch..but the systemEx hubs i had on my other fix broke every cone just from tightening the wheels up....i had to replace them with some off my tub wheels![/quote]
I have these wheels and they've been great...until a small piece of ring-like metal has just fallen off whilst tightening the wheel up. Not too hard either. Is that the cone? It's basically like a thick washer type object held between the stays and the hub. Had 'em for about 3 months. Can they be easily replaced?

Back to the subject...saw those wheels on kiwi and thought they were a good deal. A few of the guys on here might have a set to spare.

  • my locknuts cracked also but brakeless!! and down a hill!!
but i was right outside my house so it was all ok, replaced the other locknut just the other day, should be easy to find some.

  • pity about the hubs.....Harry's build is the best.

  • winston pity about the hubs.....Harry's build is the best.

Yeah they're solid. Good for London Roads especially Clerkenwell Road!!!
Looks like it was only the spacer that went on mine which seams a common problem.
I'd recommend any wheels he's built.

  • Miche(£60 F&R from Evans) on cxp22's(£15) rest for build.

    Shit-yeah !

  • Forgive my ignorance but where in relation to brick lane is brick lane bikes? I just bought a frame for 48 quid including shipping from ebay, planning to build it into a fixie if it's rideable (i never like to get my hopes up with ebay purchases hehe). I will need everything apart from the frame, the seatpost and the bb (the frame comes with a set of forks, and a TDC bb and seatpost). The seller doesnt sound like he knows much about bikes and i think it's been in storage for a good few years so I may need absolutely everything apart from the frame.

Budget about 250-£300 for everything... those wheels sound pretty good. will look them up when i'm back in the smoke.

    Any advice would be appreciated!

  • 118 Bethnal Green Road - when you are at the junction of B.Green Road and Brick lane, facing north, turn left and it's about 20m on your left.

alex, when you're back in london, let me know if you need a hand with the bike. i'm building one up from scratch at the moment, so i can show you what you need to do. if you want to build your wheels, i can also go through that with you.

  • Thanks for that Levin!

I think i'll be back in london in august, but i'm not sure if I'll have the bike with me. (Looking for a flat with Edwin). I suppose if we get it sorted out I may have moved down before I go on holiday on the 26th, but that's all speculation really. I'll let you know closer to the time.

here is the frame i've bought myself, I contacted Sheldon Brown (the man himself!) to try and get a bit more information on it, but without much luck. He seemed pretty sure that it wasn't a mass produced raleigh mule though.

I'd really really appreciate the help assembling it, I've been worrying about the price of getting certain things fitted (like the bb if it needs replacing) which i wouldnt feel confident doing myself, and if you can help with that it'd be great!

Anyway, will be sure to post some decent pictures of the frame when it arrives, probably sometime next week.

  • B.B are a piece of piss unless the threads are fucked. Even if they are it's not expensive to get a bike shop to do it if you buy the bb from them as well. I had some bad threads on my coppi road bike the b.b cost about £1 -2 more form the lbs than off the internet, so the same after p&p and the guy only charged 10 or 11 pounds to run out the threads with his tap and install it. No hassel and cheap. Sorted.

  • I got charged 66 quid for a new bb (including labour), new skewers and a new rear cog. I reckon i was jipped because either that or i have managed to completely fuck my bb in about a month. althuogh saying that i have crashed a couple of times, cant have done the bb much good. Still, the moral of the story is, I am incredibly good at breaking things, especially when fitting them for the first time, so i think i need to be supervised at all times.

cool. the frame will convert nicely. did you get it already? how heavy is it?

in any case, we'll sort something out.

  • Not yet, I think it'll be arriving next week (hopefully). From my limited research into armstrong, I'd hazard a guess that its reynolds 531 steel throughout. Not sure how heavy/light that is compared to the 501 in my single-speed, but that isnt a heavy bike really.

What are you using for your fixie project?

  • if it's 531 it'll definitely be lighter than your current ride. i'm building up a Conti for a friend and i'm going to be gutted to let it go. it's absolutely stunning. after that, it's fixing up the geared bike.
