  • are two a hell of a lot better than one? im finding im not really getting the benefit of them with just one strap. what about leather too? any difference?

    cheers

  • look out for powergrips, i've never tried two straps but a lot of people do it so someone should soon tell you weather if it's for the look or for the practicality

  • the strap is unimportant - but metal clips over plastic ones make a big difference

  • i quite fancy trying these

  • lpg you're definitely right. I was stupid enough to buy a pair of shimano 105's with plastic clips - broke the left one on my 4th ride... a pair of maillards with metal clips are on their way from the bay to replace them...

  • People use two straps on the track, coz there's a greater chance of pulling out with only one. Are you racing?

Powergrips are good, but you can't adjust them easily. I've had these for years with no problems:

If you use the same pair of shoes you can get them pretty tight fitting.

  • death traps i just can't see why you wouldn't get clip ins is it aesthetics or do they really work better in london fixed they are surely more hassle than they are worth unless you can track stand like will hoy

  • Guess i just need to find the right fitting thats gonna be tight enough for skids n stops but easy enough to get in and out of commuting. personally cant stand the look of clip in pedals and seem really inconveniant to have to change my shoes all the time.

  • Dont change your shoes - just get a decent pair of mtb spds and wear them ootnahboot.
Pub/work/down the shops - all good. They stink like fuck when you wear them all day
    everyday but whatever!
I only have to carry another pair of shoes when off skateboarding or heading
down the discotheque... (the sidis clash with the white suit & gold chains)

  • Conan check out these link for DIY toe doubble toe straps. They all seem pritty quick cheap and eassy, so just get another set of toe straps and give it ago.

(Sorry if you have already seen these)

  • Ahh cool, i like making stuff. Gonna give that a go. I can make em purple too. I like purple.

  • why bother with toestraps? spd is much better for London use in every single way, the only possible reason for for insisting on using obsolete technology is because you think it is cool....what do you do if you're trying to impress someone who thinks straps aren't cool? or someone (99.999% of the population) who won't even notice or care?

  • im sure there are some cases where they dont suite everybody, not in a fasionable way but in a functional way,or maybe some people just dont feel comfortable in them...

  • I use straps cos most of my cycling is short trips here and there, and straps work with my trainers - on long rides or days with much cycling then I can just put on some proper shoes - I find straps to be more versatile really than spds.

  • I used straps for a while in between going from flats to SPD. Fsck them! They are for track sprinters.
Tight enough to be useful means you can't get your foot out quickly. Too loose defeats 'most' of their purpose.
I ride in SPDs. I walk in SPDs. I do long rides with my SPD-SLs. I carried thongs (flip-flops) to Stones because I was riding with roadie SPD-SLs.

  • on a fixed you have even less chance of getting your feet out of straps than spds continuos motion and all that

thats only with plastic ones. i've found metal ones naturally clamp my foot so they keep my foot in place, but still v easy to get out of.

  • oh yeah, forgot about dudes without cycling shoes......worth getting a pair....more efficient, more power throughput, generally more sturdy and protect your feet better (my foot got run over by a minibus while I was on the deck with my foot on it's side...felt nowt!)better for knees and ankles too.

or get one side spd / one side flat type pedals...though putting clips and straps on the flat side might be overkill!

  • I'm always jumping on and off the bike with different shoes on, I use the toestraps because they work well for that.
    not to be "cool"

SPD's are ok for longer rides, but changing shoes every time I have to use the bike would be a right joke at the moment, and I don't think spd shoes would be much cop for working in all day

  • are straps cool??

  • Winston says it must be the only reason for using them.
    I disagree.

I also hate the way I'm considering dropping serious dosh on some new times and shoes

  • Shitting Crikey! Dont change your shoes - just get a decent pair of mtb spds and wear them ootnahboot.

you wanna get some of these, geezer.

How many shoes do you need? What are you doing? You can walk in SPDs.. if you need 'work' shoes - leave them at work and swap. Simple.
If I can manage anyone can. (I don't work for Shimano btw) ;)

  • yeah yeah, it's fuckin peer pressure you cunts

I've almost ordered some Aliums, then I'll be looking at shoes..next thing I know I'll be £100 down on the CC

    bastards.

my "work" shoes are beaten up old Vans, spd shoes won't be any good for what i have to do daily. but I will get some for longer rides and non-pub rides

  • I loved time ATAC pedals but I just don't like wearing cycling shoes at the pub or anywhere else off the bike...
Defintitely two is better than one. Quality resin (plastic) toeclips are just as good as steel ones until it gets cold enough for them to be brittle. Leather is generally better than the nylon ones but quality ones are good enough.
