Chainring bolts

  • So I've sat in all day waiting for Am*feckin*trak and finally at half four the Dolan has landed!

Wrong fork, so a day wasted...

Anywho. Also in the box was a rather lovely pair of Sugino 75 cranks and chainring. When I bolt them together do I use grease or Loctite?

  • NO grease, man on the cranks but anything else should be as greasy as a pornstar

  • dont forget to "tighten the hell out of the cranks"

  • Yeah, definitely. I was standing outside my mate's house after riding there and had my foot on the pedal, and thought how much the crank flexed. Then realised my crank was about to fall off :-|

  • Is it not possible to overtighten a crank bolt?

All bolts have a torque rating, and if you exceed that surely the bolt weakens.

When I were a lad, I were told that you didn't need to tighten a square taper crank that much since the taper did most of the work if it was a good fit.

Really don't want to damage me NJS stamped loveliness... ;-)

  • I don't know about the square taper - i've got external bottom bracket giga-x-pipe cranks with the bolt that compresses all the bearings together.

The torque ratings are useful but they're there mainly to stop the manufacturer getting sued if their instructions don't tell you to tighten it much, or if you overtighten it.

  • Crank bolts are generally spec'd to some rather large torque value, typically over 300 inch pounds (ie Campy's are specced around 312-324 inch/pounds), which is a lot of torque to generate.

You need either something very long (ie lots of leverage) or be reet well built to get close.

The chainring bolts on the other hand are dead easy to over torque.

  • kowalski Is it not possible to overtighten a crank bolt?

It is possible to overtighten a crank bolt. Don't do it. Remember: GREASE!!!!

  • I use a 'film' of grease on BB axle - sitting on the fence basically.

Tip of the day is to check that any self-extracting crank bolt caps are tight before attempting crank removal. Got caught out there once. Cap bit was slightly loose, and proceeded to strip threads in crank. Couldn't use self-extraction or separate crank puller.

BikeFix have a kit for sticking a new O/S thread in the crank with a matching removal tool, in case anyone ever finds themself in the same situation.

  • Yes, very lightly grease the BB axle. Just a smear with your finger on each flat side.

  • How about a tiny bit of anti seize copper grease :-)

  • Not related to the original post really. Just after some chairing bolt recommendations.

Wanted some plain black steel chainring bolts, went to cyclesurgery to get them (listed on their website) and they don't do them, sold me some alu alloy ones instead, sheared off 2 already and the rest creak like a mo fo.

Anyone recommed any good ones, or know where I can get plain black steel or brass single stack chainring bolts?

  • Steel BMX ones by Ison Distribution (ID) from Billy's BMX (sez RPM) or get them from Cavendish for a quid each. And rattle can them.

Alloy are rubbish, even the ones you get with Sugino 75 arms are awful.

  • Already got about 8 steels ones, guess I'll fish the best and rattle can them.

  • I bought 2 from Holdsworths to fit Campag, £2.50.

I agree that 75 bolts are shit. Been having loads of trouble with mine.
Also been trying to find black steel bolts to no avail, so i'm coming round to high-quality silver bolts, and spraying them black.
However, i was under the impression that Sugino 75 bolts were 6mm, and BMX bolts are 6.5mm??
Does anyone know whether that's true, and what length bolts i should get for for 75?

  • jamie/forms

what bolts did you get in the end?

my lhs bolt keeps coming loose, am hoping its the bolt and not the BB or crank that is fucked

guessing that trying a bolt is the cheaper option than buying a new BB/crank

  • Gizmond, I like the Dura-ace ones but they are rather pricy! silvery, not balck, tho'
