  • So I've just read this weeks Two Wheels by Matt Seaton (a fellow fixed wheeler), and wondering if anyone else shaves their legs?

    I can't say I do.

p.s. it's in the G2 section of The Guardian each Thursday btw

  • i dont, i know people who do for cycleing. thy claim its more arodynamic, but i doubt thats true, they also calim it makes cuts easyer to clean.

  • I'll come clean. I do. But, I am roadie scum.

It IS proven more aerodynamic but the savings are small.
It IS easier to massage but I don't get massages.
Is IS better for wounds as you are less likely to get infection without hair around the area.
It is rumoured to be better in a crash as the hair doesn't grip the road/track so much.
There is a psychological aspect to it. "I've shaved down. I have to be fast!"

The real reasons most people shave their legs down though are these:

    1. To fit into the roadie group you have to shave down (though I never used to.. until a big race).
    2. Your legs look sexy.

    Try it. :)

  • i did, it itched.

  • I'm with hippy.

Haven't shaved them this season though, I haven't raced and have barely gone on club rides. But were I to do either I would shave again. Gillette Venus all the way (to the lycra line).

  • erm.....does your balls count???

  • How high do you stop shaving?

Top of the thighs, so it looks like you've got a pair of hairy pant's on, or do you go the whole hog and do the arse aswell?

  • damnham How high do you stop shaving?

I stop at the lycra line. I don't see the point of going further, but I understand that some go all the way. Arse sweat is not something to be trifled with though.

yeah, not sure I'd like to taste a trifle made with arse sweat!

  • damnham How high do you stop shaving?

I have a tan line where the knicks make it to and then shave another inch or so above that.
Sharps do NOT go near my genitals. It's a rule I have. Waxing not an option although I know people who do it.

  • waxing is the singal most painfull expirence i have ever had.

the only thignt htat made me havieng to wax all the hair below my waist off bettter was, when the guy wanted to race again for shoulders down, and i won.

  • i shave one leg right to the top so that for a fleeting moment when i wake up it believe that a lithe well toned female has wrapped herself around me.

  • Shaving your legs? What?! Wouldnt get this kind of thing back up north. I don't know.

Out of interest what moisturisor do you guys use.....?

    STOPPIT!!!!

    :D

  • The fact that we can shave our legs AND wear lycra in public makes us harder than any northener... :P

  • i came close to shaving my legs once, but i cheickened out in the end. felt a bit silly.

so it does have proven benefits! i'm suprised, i though it was just a roadie conspiracy.

  • It is.

I mean.. err.. look, over there, flying hippos!

  • It is a roadie conspiracy. The benefits are dubious. If you get razor-rash, then the hygiene benefits are lost, and if it was really the case that shaved skin was less likely to get infected then you shave your arms too.

    Likewise aerodynamics.

The only reason to shave is so that you fit into the ultra-conservative milieu of road-racing.

You think messengers are cliquey? Try the Essex Road Race League.

  • ewww essex

  • I've not started any road racing here yet, only TT's but I know no one cared much if you didn't shave down in Oz. I wasn't racing A-grade though! :)
The aero benefit has been proven but like I said it's really done to 'fit in' and if you're not racing it does make your legs look nice. Do it for the laydeez.

  • Three words

    back

    sack

    crack

  • Three words

    no

    fscking

    way! :)

  • i have no hair on my upper body but lots on my lower body. Is this weird? Am i a freak?

  • no,my legs ar considerably hairier then my upper body...

  • You are both freaks, and should present yourselves to the nearest biological research facility immediately.

  • I shave, conservatice all the way. It just looks like S**t if you're wearing lycra with woollie legs underneath.
