Don't get a cheap one hoping it will last. When I headed to paris last year mine didn't even make out the country....

I'm on my third or fourth one now. First I had a cheapie that died after a while. Then I had a Cateye one that did cadence as well, but loads of wires all over the bike. That was before I was fixed. After that I went wireless. But with the wireless a wierd thing used to happen. It would pick up the flicker from my front light. I had to move my front light further away from the bike computer to stop it competing with the wheel transmitter. Putting the light on steady didn't seem to work either. Strange.
They all try and sell it to you as though more functions are better. But you probably won't use them all. I would get a simple one that just does speed, trip distance and overall mileage, but is also branded like Cateye or whatever. Get one with big numbers so you're not squinting to look at it and then miss the traffic. And also where it's easy to change the battery.
I have this thing of going for a meal every thousand miles - the millenium meal I call it. Mine is a Sigma Sport one. About a tenner from ebay. Fairly cheap and cheerful but quite solid all the same. Just completed 8000 miles on this one.
One more thing to consider, if you do use a heart rate monitor, is to get a computer that also has a bulit in HRM. Then you don't need 2 things strapped to your bars. Again Cateye comes to mind.

My favourite was a wireless cat-eye. It did cadence too and was superb as the cadence could be displayed as the predominant piece of information and speed secondary.
Right now on my geared bike I run a Polar HRM, with Cadence. It's all wireless too. I love it, but not as much as the cat-eye I had.
Going wireless is definitely the best thing to do, they're a bitch otherwise (like the Campagnolo Ergobrain I had on my Cannondale).
The cat-eye's are fab for spares too. Everyone stocks them, from Evans to Condor. You'll find it easy to get batteries, and fittings when you eventually need them. Stuff like that makes the difference.

My favourite was the Cateye Enduro 2 but it's not made any more and I lost it! :(
The new ones aren't so reliable I've heard. I use a Polar HRM these days although I'd love to get hold of an Enduro 2 for the fix (I still have the mounting bracket fitted) -

i use a cateye strada - the wired one - but they've just brought out a wireless one. Super splim and cool blak. v nice. also comes with a stem clip so you can keep the 'bars free of clutter. not that i'm at all anal about that...

im now in the market for a wireless on of these. pref no more than £30.
Any recommendations more recent than may '07?

Cateye strada, I've been using one for the past two years and it's flawless.

Totally pointless wanky anecdote:
I've got a cheapy Cateye one that goes absolutely apeshit when I cycle past the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital or the Us Embassy (probably cos of all the electromagnetic shite they're pumping out).
I'll bet none of you fuckers can boast a recorded top speed of 134.6 MPH

That's right on the entry price for a wireless computer so doesn't give you the greatest choice... that said, I still love Cateye:

If so... yeah, get that... that's the exact screen layout of the one I loved most from their range.

2nd vote for a Cateye Strada. Have the wireless on my Condor, and the double wireless on my geared road bike. Top bits of kit.

They are only 30 something quid. I have one. Very good, although the head unit bit is quite big compared to the strada.

thats the unit i have been using for a year or so. It suits me down to the ground, only thing is it doesn't do average speed. I am thinking of upgrading to the one on sale by ribble which has heart monitor and stuff.
but otherwise the cateye's seem good to me. Wireless is handy too.

I use the Suunto T3. HR and speedo. Not cheap but worthwhile if you're keen to analyse training data / info.

get a Knog - one button, very easy to use!
I have a Cateye that has lots of functions but I have no idea how to access them because I can't be bothered, so I have now taken it off...

My iPhone turns off and reboots whenever i walk by the hospital here. Sounds weird, i know, but I've noticed it 5 times because the only time i walk by there is when i'm leaving work and I've driven my car, which is rare, and during that time I invariable pull my phone out of my pocket.

For £20 you can get one of these:
it's got a metal bezel and a rubber treaded surround (was one Michelin branded design I think) - It's not as good as my Cateye but is a bit funkier and 2/3 the price.
Any of u guys use a cycle computer - I'm looking at getting a neat, small wireless computer... let's hope I don't start going mad about the stats and forget to look at the road. What do u recommend?
