Climbing wheels

  • Hi All,

I'm doing some research into carbon climbing wheels and, no doubt, Campag Hyperon 2s are the standout off-the-shelf choice. However, has anybody got any recommendations re: alternatives or component preferences for a bespoke build?

  • everyone says the C24's are great. good 'ol 202's though...

  • Been looking in roughly the same area for myself, and I suspect Zipp will be taking my money. Never really been a fan but 202 Firecrests seem to be the best OTP.

  • Im pretty rubbish at desribing wheels but I have a set of 202s and used to have some hyperons. Cant say i climbed much with either but the hyperons are a nicer ride than the 202s imo. Feels a bit more like a standard wheelset only very light. You may or may not like that but they do spin up very nicely. 202s feels like most carbon wheels, hard to distinguish from a 303 or whatever really. I like both but id get hyperons if i allrdy had another deep carbon wheelset to have bit more varied feel.

(disclaimer: My hyperons werent 2s and the 202s have 24 in the front as well so not standard)

  • Extralite Hyperclimb C26...

    ~900g a pair.

Wouldn't fancy descending very far on them, but I bet they climb like a dream.

  • Should've said that I want clinchers and not tubs.

  • Climbing wheels?

    Try the London Eye:

  • Lightweight Gipfelsturm would be your best bet if you have deep pockets. 1025g per set.

The Campag tings are 1345g (claimed) which means add 10% because Italians are liars.

You're not really after climbing wheels then

  • The Hyperons look very cool, I'd probably get the 202's though.

Interestingly (the last time I looked, this may be wrong) the FC variant of the 202 was clincher only.

Of course, the 202 is pretty porky, even more so as the clincher is a good 200g more than the proper version.

Thinking about it I'd probably get the wheelset that Solarider has on his latest Moots- the ENVE XC 29er rims on Chris King disc hubs.

I have no idea what they weigh, but I think they are cool.

  • What is avid or the likes paying you?

  • If they are then I suspect the cheque got lost in the post.

  • I'd probably get some of these laced to some lightweight hubs.

    Probably 28-2x, 20-radial.

  • Extralite hubs, and weight weenie spokes, and alu nips.

    280x2 + 136 + 49 + 48x3.8 + 15 = 863g

  • I once built a set of 20/24 carbon shallow tubulars... just over 1 kg for the set, terrible wheels...

My deep 24/20 wheelset is pretty awesome. I figured 28 spokes at the back would sure up the shallow rim.

I really hate climbing on anything that flexs.

  • Are you shore of that?

  • Are you shore of that?

The 28 spokes on a uber shallow rim thing?

    Nope. Not sure.

But its what I would build. Well I wouldnt spend out on those hubs. But they made the numbers look good.

I'm sure plenty would go for spokes 3x. Which would certainly be easier to live With. But I'm forever tinkering With my Wheels anyway, and reckon I could get a set of the above Wheels dialled to support my 84kg (FFS!) bulk up a mountain.

(sorry about the weird use of Capitals. My keyboard/PC is a cnut)
