no fiddling
think i need a tripod now
had to balance camera on a dustbin lid to get this, not quite perfect but shows it can do nice long exposures quite well

Small (juggling) bean bag and use the delay timer? Allows camera placement and adjustment without having to carry something long and hard in a pocket / disembowelling yourself in a collision.
You'll still have to find a handy wall / dustbin / fencepost / car roof etc.
