  • As a dog owner (rescue dog) I'm actually not keen on most other peoples dog handling abilities, or pretty much lack of! Its a bit like that sticker for bikes thats 'Just we're both riding bikes doens't make us friends' kind of a deal.

The times my former nippy dog has bitten people has been ...
unknown builders mate letting himself into empty house (apart from dogs) and trying to retrieve tools from behind dogs bed.
GF who had just met the dog cornering him in the boot of the car (his bed and boot of car are his spaces) whilst he was eating/drinking.
My jeans when he jumped a double single strand barbed wire topped fence, and got one back leg caught between the lines leaving him dangling by a back leg. Dislocated the leg/hip and tore a few ligaments trying to break free, I had to grab the dog and twist 180 degree's to release, so naturally he was freaking out and just latched onto the nearest thing (cuff of my jeans).

He was cool around kids, and the other dog literally doesn't know what teeth are for (the perfect soft furry monster), however, no matter how 'trustworthy' a dog is, I would never leave one alone with a kid, they often get jealous of the attention a kid receives, and kids have a habit of finding places to poke dogs that they don't like resulting in the inevitable.

Anyway, back on topic, if anyone is thinking of getting a pet, start at a reputable rescue centre, most of them will let you 'trial' an animal, 1) to see if its compatible with you 2) if you find its not the right decision for you a few months down the line you can return the animal safe in the knowledge that someone more suitable might be able to offer it a more suited home.

    1) The older dog a few weeks after we first got him, he'd never seen water before, didn't know how to swim and loved just running around like a lunatic with his new found freedom. 2) Both dog's together about a year later in the woods stalking sticks.
