Phil you were probably in his blind spot. It happened to me last year when I was filtering along stationary traffic and women turned right just as I was coming past her. Despite trying to brake and swerve around her my attempt was fruitless and I hit that bonnet and flew over it with my cleat ripped out from shoe staying attached to the pedal.
She should in theory have checked her rear view mirror though just before initiating the manoeuvre - and so should have the cab driver. Various legal ways to look at it though.
Saying that, you probably couldn't have stopped in time with or without brakes, just like me.
