The mounts on mine were the same as more modern ones also, and I was using frogglegs, it was a distance thing between the mounts that was the problem-slamming the pads all the way back into them meant that I couldn't get decent contact or toe-in properly. Hence having the choice of different brakes or slim-profile pads.
Hope yours will work out though, looks like a really fun ride.
