Everyone seems to have largely forgotten that the reason Crimea has so many ethnic Russians in it is that Uncle Joe deliberately murdered the bulk of the original population through intentional starvation (numbers dwarfing Uncle Adolfs tribute act) and then replaced the population with Russians. Immediately created a nice little vassal state with no troublesome anticommunists and a nice strategic position.

Then in the 50s, Gorbachev (Russian but with Ukranian ancestors) transferred Crimea from Russia to Ukraine, in his position as Chief Soviet.
