399.99GBP is a bargain. The old orange colour gives way to a new yellow version, but thats it I think.As an all-rounder, I think its pretty good.

I'm just about to build a crossbike up and was wondering what the benefit of making it fixed/ss would be?

The same benefit as making any other bike fixed/SS but more in line with SS MTB as that sees a lot of mud too.

Comes from my love for riding both my CX (more challenging riding position) and my 29er (more grip and comfort) off-road. Looking to swap out my CX-commuter frame when funds allow (want disc brakes for winter). Hoping to be able to set it up monstercross style, with some spare 29er tyres, occasionally. Depends on the frame though (Cotic X, Salsa Vaya, Singular peregrin, maybe).
This inbred shows that it need'nt cost alot to put on together (more drop bar 29er, than monstercross though)

Hi everyone,
considering of getting some kind of CX bike (probably SS) in foreseeable future, but got a few questions:
*what's the main difference between roadracer and CX (except for the tyres, obviously)?
*will some cheap-end road racer do the job with the replacement of tyres and removal of gears?
*rhetorical question but still - can a SS CX be used as a substitute for 26" MTB in say 80% of the occasions?Might be going back to my country, and my mates (95% of them) ride MTB's, so can't go anywhere with them on my CAAD.

A) geometry, brake type (discs/cantis)
B) Only if it has v brake/canti mounts. Road calipers will not do. So long as whatever frame you end up with has semi horizontal dropouts or a chain tensioner on vertical dropouts then you should be fine - but again, it will need v brake/canti mounts.
C) That question depends entirely on where your legs can take you and the technicality of the terrain that your friends are riding on. -

so the best way would be to look for the actual crosser frame and forks?
Well the toughest recreational MTB ride I've done was about 90k ride, with elevation with I'd say no more than like 100mtrs, was tough due to hot summer.
My vision is that the bike shall come quite light, plus less rolling resistance of narrower tyres... All that should compensate the lack of gears a bit.
The other aspect is that I don't really want to maintain a proper MTB (say XT and Reba level). -

Where I live it can as I live in a very unchallenging off road area. Even when I used MTBs they always ended up rigid (and SS) with narrow light tyres on them as they were faster.
However, if you live somewhere with rocks, roots, very loose surfaces etc,. the lack of big tyres and lack of any suspension will slow you down a lot and make long rides a chore.
There's a great thread on the MTBR forum comparing a Sir Niner with a One Niner. With the same set-up and geometry. About as good a comparision of quality steel vs quality scandium enriched alu, as you'll get. Very interesting.
