I have two of those cheap Chinese Cree LED headlamps - with the standard plain lens it throws out a big, even round spot of light which is great for a helmet-mounted MTB light. It's apparently 1200 lumens but I'm not sure if I believe it.
For road use I have the same model fitted with a cheap ebay horizontalifying lens - the beam becomes a long thin strip which, when fitted to the handlebars and aimed slightly downward, acts like a car headlamp on dipped beam - it illuminates the road ahead and to the side of you, but doesn't dazzle oncoming traffic at all.
It has a relatively large strip of light rather than a single LED, which is cool looking at the very least, and possibly more visible. Bright with decent visibility from all angles. Should make a good all-rounder - front as a backup to my headlamp, and rear as the main light with a little clip-on backup.

I saw some of these today and was impressed by them, too:
