^^ Don't know for sure that it's British built, but it's quite likely.
I doubt a 28.0 frame would come out at 29.0 even when powder coated so it's 28.6mm plain gauge.
If they bothered with Nervex lugs, it's probably 531 (or equivalent) rather than gas-pipe.A good place to start might be to see if the frame number points toward the bigger UK builders, I know Holdsworth did build plain gauge reynolds frames with Nervex lugs, I'm sure they weren't alone
Frame numbers are also stamped on the steerer tube, so don't worry if you can't read it through the powder coat
Thanks Rik,
I'll do a bit more digging, find the frame number and see where that points me...
In the interim I searched for Holdsworth 531 frame and this was the first link: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251454265163?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2648 I've asked for some more details and photographs of the lugs, it looks pretty identical to me from the small images - but even if it's not exactly the same, it feels like I'm getting closer thanks to you...
I'll keep you posted - thanks again,
Mat

Evening,
I've just had the forks off and the stamp on the steerer tube (thanks for pointing out that's where it would be Rik) matches what I thought I could see under the powder on the BB - reading '5000'.
I'm not sure where that would point, but if it is 60s or so and is a simple consecutive numbering pattern, I'd imagine a smaller builder?
The frame on eBay has the same lugs and 531 tubing - and the owner seemed sure it was Holdsworth, but I'm not sure what evidence he has for that. Everything seems to point at Holdsworth, but I'd have thought that if it is 60s, then with Holdsworth's consecutive numbering system, the frame would have a higher number.
Any thoughts?
Any ideas where I might start given the info I have?
Cheers, Mat.

I think I might have it Rik, Ben... what do you think?
http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=196047
Same nervex lugs, same forks and fork crown, 531 tubing... What do you reckon, do you think it's a Holdsworth 531 special?

does it have head badge holes? if so you could measure the distance against a Holdsworth badge. Or ask someone who owns one to measure theirs.

[QUOTE=Hilly Ben;4089820]seat post size will give you the most information
27.2 = top quality frame, Reynolds 531/Columbus SL
26.8 = mid level i.e columbus Aelle(usually)
26.4 = hmmm Belgian half decent but common and you'll never find the builder, or british middle of the roadNot all Reynolds 531 will take a 27.2 seat post. The frame tubing was supplied in various internal diameters so although 27.2 may well be 531 just because it takes a different size does not mean it is not 531.
My own Alan Shorter (made for me in 1963) is double butted 531 with a seat post diameter of 26.8 -

I just spotted this Massi in the ebay finds thread, and am I too arrogant in thinking it looks very similar to my Alf Webb? I know the Alf Webb is a rebadged something but I've never found out what

I picked up an interesting dawes from my wife's cousin.....it's 531, and all the equipment on it points to 1930's.....what model might it be?
It has a very nice cyclo standard 3 speed conversion and resilion 'the cantilever' brakes, as well as a Williams chainset and Brampton headclip.....the hubs are British Hub Co 'solite'.....so some nice bits, which leads me to believe it was an expensive machine when new.....I'm looking for a comparison, as the decals are all but gone.
Better Photos later... -

Cheers rik....good spot with the red one. I found that while googling and then promptly lost it again!
I have no full bike shots yet, but I'll get them up tomorrow.
30's stuff on them is very thin on the ground......I feel a plan coming on for it though.....nothing too drastic, involving some GB Maes bars and a coat of 'ankorwax'

Unfortunately not, it's just a BLB transfer. Can anyone help with a Holdsworth badge?
