Wanted: Your busted old 10 speed casette

  • Can I bum a used/busted/broken 10 speed shimano 105 or Ultegra cassette off anybody? Doesn't need to run smoothly, broken teeth is no objection.

Being the sophisticated vintage afficionado that I am I got my hands on a pair of 1996 Shimano 600 TriColour hubs. Which according to the internet can either work perfectly well with modern 10 speed cassettes or mabye not work with modern 10 speed cassettes at all. I reckon the best way to find out is to try one one before I commit to buying a whole groupset.

Basically, I am hoping you will just give me whatever you have lying around. Will pay you in Japanese beer. Or if you let me borrow one to try on, I promise to drop it off back at yours a day or so later.

  • I can catergorically state that 10 speed cassettes work fine on these hubs (I have a 10 speed cassette on mine right now), whether the hybrid ones with the threaded end on the freehub body that accept the uniglide cassette or the Hyperglide only variant which might be yours going by the date as that is the year 9 speed came into production.
Some of the earlier 10 speed cassettes were redesigned to fit on the new freehub body shimano brought out but as this made those wheels incompatible to 8 & 9 speed cassettes Shimano dropped it not that long afterwards.

I have a brand new 10 speed 11-28 Ultegra cassette for sale if you're interested.

  • how to tell if it will work or not:

if your hub's casette body is threaded on the outside ONLY it WON'T work.

if it has threads on the inside of the body, or on both parts, it WILL work!

    for a 10speed, you'll also need a 1mm spacer.

  • he mentioned it was a 1996 hub, that's likely to be the HG only, they didn't even make the 8 speed UG hubs at that point.

  • UG was before HG :) hyperglide is the one with the inner threads. i do not know when they started producing the new system but it goes like this:

FH6400 is the original one, UG only
FH6401 i don't know, but if i remember correctly, that's still UG only (could be wrong)
    FH6402 UG/HG = good for you :)
