Broadband Internet & ISP Recommendations?

  • Good thing its unlimited...

  • Is it possible to get broadband these days, without wi-fi ?

  • Just a different router / modem, no?

  • They seem to all come in one now. I am looking for a router with two wired connections, and no wi-fi.

  • Most (all?) routers supplied have 4 Ethernet ports and if you go in to the router settings you can turn the Wireless off.

  • Yes I should have known that, duh. Thanks for the tip.

Will probably go with BT Infinity. Looks like an ok deal, and got good reviews.

  • Wrong thread, but deal with it.

Need broadband. Don't need anything crazy fast (I think...). Thinking about a £20 (£17.50 first 6 months), that includes line rental, unlimited, 16mbs, with EE. Or £12.90/m for a Three sim which I can just tether to (12mb/s, 14mb/s if I throw it in my LTE phone).

    Thoughts? Other suggestions?

(I wish we had virgin here. All this line rental bull shit makes broadband a joke).

  • Virgin are shit. They gradually up the price as they know they've got you locked in. We started off paying £35 a month for TV, phone and broadband, it's now double that.

  • ^Snap, they're massive cunts.

Issue is we have no TV antenna, so they're the only game in town in terms of feeding the tellybox.

  • Virgin are great. They gradually up the speed as they know they've got you locked in. We started off paying £60 a month for TV, phone and broadband, it's now the same but with faster broadband.

    Dealt with it.

I was paying <£20 for super fast internet. No phone line needed. No TV wanted. It was just internet for a reasonable price.

Everything else in the same realm of speed is £15+ plus (actually, usually much more than 15) and another £15+ for a phone line I don't want and will never use.

Having said that, I know a lot of people have had a horrible time with Virgin. I haven't so that's all I can go with.

    Dealt with it.

    Fair enough. Cheers.

  • nice email from Virgin :)

edit: between August 2014 and January 2015. meh.

  • Better than a kick in the head.

  • Try logging into your account to see if it gives anything more specific.

I get a message saying mine'll be upgraded between April and June '14.

  • Is/was anyone here on O2? They have been going on about switching to Sky for nearly a year now and its finally gone through last week.

Only problem is that its total shit now. Have completely lost connection for a number of hours on 2 separate occasions and Netflix now rarely works. Fair enough I am connecting to the American servers but I've never had a problem until now.

Anyone else in a similar situation? I'd like to switch providers but really don't want the hassle or the new 12 month contract...

  • My 12 month contract is up for renewal at the start of May and I want to do a bit of research. Currently with Virgin on National Broadband as they don't offer Fibre Optic where I live. Strangely though we can get BT Infinity.
Don't they use the same network?

  • I think Virgin use their own network. We've just ditched them and signed up with Andrews and Arnold. Initial impressions really really good. Options for ADSL, fttc, fttp, depending on where you live. Pricing looked complicated initially, but it's just unfamiliar and is actually straightforward. The service is top notch. I spoke to them before we signed up, and they did not try to sell me anything, but talked through the options, answered questions and left me to decide. I've needed to speak to them once since and they were easy to get through to, and I spoke to someone who knew what they talking about, and despite the issue being a BT issue they came up with a solution and got it sorted for me.

  • We're with Primus Saver, and they just sent us a letter -mid contract- to state that the price is going up 'unavoidably'. balls.

  • From last month, if you take a out a new contract you have the right to leave, without penalty, if the price is raised.

I'm still trying to get my head around it. Doesn't help that their site doesn't offer the ability to check if I can get all of their services in my area or not. I may give them a call to work it out instead.

  • You buy units which equate to an amount you can d/l per month. A unit (costs a ten er) and will be used much faster with peak time 9am-6pm) use than off peak. Ie 1gb at peak time is 0.8units, where as 50gb off peak is 1 unit. Speak to your current ISP and ask what your normal monthly usage is (and if possible the peak/ off peak break down) then you can get an idea of what you need. You're only tied in for a month at a time though so no long contract probs.

The availability checker is bottom left corner of their home page. But call them...They're nice!

  • I'm praying google actually get the contract for San Jose (Palo Alto/Mountainview). I'd move to get it, the only downside... the area they want is where the very wealthy live (typical eh ?)

  • Slightly off topic:

can anyone recommend a 4g dongle with wifi? Need to get mobile broadband for travels that I can use with a few devices at once. Ideally I want something I can place high up in the house in a window for best mobile reception, then with strong enough wifi to cover a normal house.

  • Anyone else on EE Broadband? Speed has been great and then over the weekend it's been terrible on and off.
