Mandolin. Serious suggestion. Normal uke's just sound pants (but ok if you main thing is singing)
Mandolin is an extremely compact yet sonically rich lead instrument. But much more mellow than a banjo.
If it has to be a guitar for electric just grab a tele/strat and unbolt the neck, for acoustic the very obvious baby taylor.
