I've even had some bikes for just under a week before. I don't see why you have to be riding a single bike for years, so long as you're riding and enjoying what you're doing I don't see a problem. Bikes may cost you lots of money but it's a helluva lot more fun that having that money in the bank and leading a shit boring life.
Bikes are actually extremely cheap. Most 'proper' hobbies are usually a £10k buy in + maintenance. Cycling is a bargain
