And you might be able to tag along, if the route is made public (not necessarily the case) but it would be bad form for the reasons given above. Unless you really couldn't afford it, in which case I can't see anyone being bothered.
It's a fair question: I am fundamentally uncomfortable with paying to ride too, but if you just want to do the route steal it and do it another weekend. Plus audaxes are excellent value compared to most sportives.
